Thomas was apprenticed in Greenland and was living on Champernowne's farm on Great Bay in 1706.(56)

There was another Thomas Perkins (often referred to as Capt. Thomas) from Topsfield who also lived in Arundel and many of the deeds concern this man. Our Thomas signed with a mark, Capt. Thomas (also referred to as Thomas Perkins, Gent.) was literate so that gives us a starting point to separate the two. Also, our Thomas lived in Greenland and Portsmouth from time to time and that also gives us a way to separate them:

The selectmen located "a highway of four rods wide from the western end of the persell of land which Andrew Brown and Thomas Perkins lately bought of James Tyler, Jabez Dorman, and John Watson for to build a fort upon..."(2) This undoubtedly refers to Capt. Thomas. This land is referred to in the above deed.

Our Thomas was in Cape Porpoise in 1720, but was back in Portsmouth in 1721, returning to Arundel in 1722, but Mary was admitted to the Greenland Church in 1726.(56)

At a meeting 25 Sept 1719 "Andrew Bron and Thomas Perkins was chosen to agree with John Eveleth minister for to carry on the work of the ministry with us for a quarter of a year next, and what they doe agree with him for, the town will stand by and allow."(3) For £170 Thomas agreed "to Raise it (the meeting house), underpin it and Shingle it, make seats below, and Glase it, by the last day of October".(4) As Capt. Thomas was associated with Andrew Brown I suspect this refers to him.

Thomas purchased from the heirs of William Reynolds all the land between the Kennebunk River and a line running between Bass Cove through Great Pond to the sea. He lived in a garrison house near Butler's Rocks on the Kennebunk River.(1) Bradbury is getting his Thomases mixed up... the first reference refers to our Thomas from Greenland (see deeds below) and the second concerning the garrison near Butler's Rocks refers to Capt. Thomas.

Pierre de Morlaix moved to Shropshire and became High Steward in Hugh Despencer's Oxfordshire estate. It is probable that Pierre knew the Despencers prior to his relocation to England as the family held lands in the Morlaix region (Sir Edward le Despencer was killed in the battle of Morlaix in 1342).

There is a quitclaim from Robert Perkins of Bishop's Cleeve, Gloucestershire dated 29 Oct. 1338.(1) In 1364 a Philip Perkins of Helmdon, Northamptonshire (near Hillmorton) was a witness to a grant of land by William Nicholes of Helmdon to William Assheby of Sulgrave.(2)

In 1424 a fine was imposed between John Collee & Elizabeth and William Perkins and his wife Margaret. William was listed as "son of John the Seneschal". William and Margaret were awarded the manor and advowson of Ufton Robert near Reading as well as a moiety of land in Buscot about 1411. Ufton Richard had its own church, St. John the Baptist, which belonged to the Knights Hospitallers from Greenham who agreed with William that it should be combined with St. Peter's church in Ufton Robert due to the decline in the population following the Black Death in the previous century. St. John's became a chapel and by the 1700's had been converted into two cottages which were torn down by the 1880's.

William was a witness to a grant from Henry VI to the provost and college of Eton to the lands in New and Old Windsor and Clewer. In 1447 William was refered to as "Baillous" to the Duke of Gloucester in the court roll of Bray Manor.

Thomas was the ancestor of the Berkshire & Nottinghamshire part of the family with Berkshire descending through his son John who inherited the Ufton estate, and Nottinghamshire descending through is son Thomas who inherited the Madresfield lands. In the Close Roll of 1 Edward IV (1461) Thomas is referred to as "Thomas Perkins, Esq." It's interesting to note that some medieval deeds concerning the Perkins family of Ufton Court were found in the roof of Ufton Court in 1805.(1) Part of the house dates from the 15th century, however, it was modified in 1567 by Richard Perkins.

In his will Thomas directed that he be buried in the church of St. John the Baptist before the Rood, and that his mortuary be as the custom and manner was. To the high altar, 8d. To the mother churches of Coventry and Lichfield, 4d. each. To the parish church of Hillmorton, 6s. 8d.

To his wife Alice, all his lands and tenements in the towns of Fylds, Hillmorton and Lylborne [in Northamptonshire] as long as she continueth in widowhood. If she marry, Henry, his son, shall have the said lands and tenements, but if he die without lawful issue, they shall remain to Jone and Jelyan, his daughters, and their heirs. If they die without issue, the tail lands and tenements shall remain to the next heirs and the fee simple lands and tenements to the inhabitants of the town of Hillmorton for ever, to the best use that can be provided for the pleasure of God and for the health of his soul and all Christian souls.

The residue of his estate went to his wife Alice and Thomas Clerke, executors. Supervisors were George Sale and Richard Smith, to whom 40s. between them for their labors. Witnesses were Sir John Grendon, vicar of Hillmorton, Sir John Stookes, Sir Thomas Bolland, William Bayle, Richard Horne, John Cumpton, Roger Jones and others.

The will of Alice Perkyns of Hillmorton, widow was dated 31 July and proved 15 Oct. 1538. She asked that she "be buried in the church of St. John the Baptist of Hyllmorton". To jeyn Sleyter, her daughter. To Juliana Cumpton, her daughter. To Henry Perkyns, her son and executor. Supervisors were John Stokys, clerk, Thomas Clerke, & Richard Smyth. Witnesses were John Brendon, clerk, George Dobbe, William Freman, Thomas Dunkele, & Richard Bassett. The inventory dated 10 Oct. 1538 was taken by John Brendon, clerke, Wm. Buttye, Wm. Freman, Thomas Dunkley, and Edwd Twygare, appraisers and amounted to �36 2s 1d. Proved at Litchfield, 15 Oct. 1538 by Henry Perkins. (1)

Henry Perkins made a will, but it is missing. It was proved on 16 Jun 1546 by Simon Clare, Thomas Cumpton, and Rachard Balye, executors. An abstract, dated prior to 1894 states that Henry's son Thomas is mentioned in the will, but a more recent abstract does not have this. (1)

To John Perkyns my son and to the heirs male of his body lawfully begotten or to be begotten...my house in Hillmorton late occupied by Thomas Bassett, together with one orchard and a close lying on the back side, and one half-yard of arable land with meadows, pastures and commons thereto belonging... for default of such issue, then the property to go to son Edward Perkins, then to son Luke Perkins, then to the Right heirs of me the said Thomas Perkins for ever.

Unto Alice my now welbeloved wife all my household stuff, furniture in the parlor or chamber where we used to lie (one coffer with his evidences excepted) and the use of the said chamber as long as she keepeth herself a widow...

Witnesses were Edward Tomson, Edward Heres, Thomas Bottre, Nicholas Duell, William Kebbell, and Thomas Heres. The inventory amounted to �192:10:0, and was taken 29 Mar. 1592 by Edward Compton, Richard Smyth and Thomas Garfield. (1)

In 1601 Henry was one of the appraisers of the estate of William Kebble.(1)

Administration on Henry's estate was granted to his son Thomas on 5 Apr 1609. A bond was given for the tuition of Margaret, Edward, Anne (Agnes), Sarah, Francis, William, Lucy (Luke), Elizabeth, James (Jacob) and "the other children". John was of age and married so he is not mentioned. Inventory was taken on 22 Mar 1608 by Rowland Wilcox, gentleman, and Thomas Perkins, John Sawbridge, Thomas Compton and William Burnam, yeomen. Henry's estate amounted to �336 8s 8d. (2)

The Sawbridge family came from the hamlet of Sawbridge in the parish of Wolfhamcote, Warwick, about six miles from Hillmorton.

John Perkins' Home- 75 Arbor St., Wenham

John and his family embarked for New England on the "Lyon" on 1 Dec 1630 and arrived in Boston on 5 Feb 1631. John and Judith Perkins were admitted to the Boston church as members 107 and 108 in early 1631 and he is on the 18 May 1631 list of freemen. On 3 Apr 1632 the Court of Assistants ordered "that no person whatsoever shall shoot at fowl upon Pullen Poynte or Noddle's Ileland, but that the said places shall be reserved for John Perkins to take fowl with nets" (this may refer to his son John). He was on a committee to set the bounds of Roxbury and Dorchester on 7 Nov 1632.

John moved to Ipswich in 1633 and was granted 40 acres in 1634 where he owned a large island at the mouth of the Ipswich River. He was part of the group that planned the settlement of Ipswich, however, on the list of men authorized by the court to begin the settlement on 1 Apr. 1633 his name is listed as William Perkins which must be an error as William was living in Roxbury at this time and didn't move to Essex county for another 20 years.

In 1635 John was granted three acres of upland, ten acres of meadow, an island at More's Point, ten acres where he built a house, six acres of meadow and six acres of upland. In 1636 another six acres of plowland. In 1639 he was granted another forty acres at Chebacco.

John was a Representitive to the General Court in 1636. Also in 1636 he was one of the people who did the inventory on Sarah Dillingham's estate. John signed the petition of remonstrance against the departure of John Winthrop Jr. from Ipswich on 21 June 1637.(1)

John Perkins, Sr. was a commoner of Ipswich on "the last day of the last month, 1641". He was on the grand jury on 28 Dec. 1641, 26 Sept. 1648 and at the 28 Sept. 1652 court in Ipswich.

"28th of first mo called March 1654 I John Perkines the Elder of Ipswich being at this tyme sick and weake in body yet through the mercy and goodnes of the Lord retaining my vnderstanding and memory: do thus Dispose of and bequeath my Temporale estate as ffolloweth

first I Doe giue and bequeath vnto my Eldest sonn John Perkines a foale of my young mare being new with foale if it please the Lord shee foale it well also I give and bequeath to my sonn Johns two sonnes John and Abraham to each of them one of my yearleing heyfers:

also I give and bequeath to my sonn Thomas Perkines one cow and one heyfer also I give & bequeath to his sonn John Perkines one ewe to be delivered for his use at the next shearing tyne [time]

also I doe give and bequeath to my Daughter Elizabeth Sarjeant one cow and an heyfer to be to her and her children after her Decease as it may please ye Lord they may increase the proffits or increase to be equelly Devided amongst the satde children

also I Doe five to my Daughter mary Bradbery one cow and one heyfer or a young steere to remaine to her & to her children in theyr increase or proffits as it shall please the Lord to bless them and to be equaly Devided to the children:

also I Doe give and bequeath to my Daughter Lidia Bennitt one cow and one heyfer or steere to be equaly Devided to her children in theyr increaseproffits after her Decease:

also I Doe give and bequeath vnto my sonn Jacob Perkines my Dwelling howse together with all the outhowseing, and all my landes of one kinde and other together with all improvements therevpon to be his in full posession & according to a former covenant, after the decease of my wyfe and nott before and so to remaine to him and to his heires forever:

all the rest of my estate of one kinde and other I Doe wholy leave to my Deare wife Judeth Perkines apointing and ordaining my sayde wyfe the sole Executrix of this my Last will and Testament Desireing my sayde wife to Dispose of the cattell above mentioned according to her discresion as they shall prosper steeres or heyfers as also to Dispose of somoe of the increase or some of the increase of the sheep to || the || children of my sonn Thomas and of my three Daughters at the Discresion of my sayde wife and this I Doe ordaine as my Last will and Testament subscribed with mine owne hand this twnty eighth Day of he first month 1654:

The Perkins homestead on 75 Arbor St. in Wenham was sold by the Perkins family to a developer and was unfortunately demolished in May 2011. It was one of the first homes in the town having been originally built in the 17th century and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.
