The Woodruffe family bought land in Woolley and Notton beginning in the 14th century and continued until 1517 when they owned five out of the ten knights fees. Woolley was their chief residence.

John was the Receiver of Wakefield and held the lands of Woolley, near Wakefield, Yorkshire. In his will he wished to be buried in the churchyard at Normanton.

John was receiver of Edward IV and Richard III for the manors of Wakefield, Coningsbrough and Hatfield as well as Constable of Sandal.
In his will, John makes his son and heir, Richard Woodruffe, his executor and he mentions Richard's daughter Elizabeth Wentworth.(1)
At St. Peter's church you can find John and Elizabeth and their arms in one of the north windows of what used to be his chapel.

The oldest bell in St. Peter's church in Woolley is inscribed that it was given by Sir Richard Woodruffe. Sir Richard was the High Sheriff of York from 1510 until 1518.
