Listed in Domesday book as holding 22 manors with a value of £63.6s.4d during the reign of King Edward and with a value of £67.0.8 during the reign of William the Conqueror. The lands he invaded or laid unjust claims to were valued at £20.19.9.
Hermer was probably the builder of Wormegay Castle, a motte and bailey earthwork.
