Also in the 1850 Federal Census of Barre was the household of Samuel and Eleanor Pike, both born in England.  Samuel Pike was Sophia (Pike) Shirley's brother.  Samuel, age 58 and Eleanor Pike, age 56, both born in England, with their sons John, age 22 and Fred, age 18 (both born in New York) also made their way to Michigan; this family also appears in the 1870 Federal Census of Michigan in Kalamazoo Township, Kalamazoo County, Michigan.

In 1860 Edwin and Sophia were again enumerated in the town of Barre, post office Albion, Orleans County, New York:

Edwin and Sophia Shirley are both buried in Schoolcraft Cemetery (neither are listed in the Michigan Death Index 1867-1897).

The six children of Edwin Shirley and Sophia Pike were:

1. Edwin Shirley, was born on 9 June 1832 in England and died on 15 March 1918 (he is listed in the 1910 household of his daughter, Cora, at age 77, see below).  Edwin married Sarah Hall in about 1853.  Sarah was born on 11 September 1836 and died on 2 July 1905.  Sarah and Edwin are both buried on the family plot in Riverside Cemetery in Kalamazoo, Michigan.  In the 1860 Federal Census they were enumerated in the town of Lockport, Niagara County, New York.  He listed his occupation as a mason, their children in the 1860 household were Isabel age 6 and George, age 3 years.

By 1870 Edwin and Sarah were in Michigan, Schoolcraft Village, Kalamazoo County: Edwin Shirley, age 38, listed his occupation as a "sawyer at Heady Shop" and wife Sarah, age 33, born in New York, with three children: Isabel, age 16, born in New York; George, age 13, born in Michigan; Cara, age 3, born in Indiana.  In the 1880 Federal Census Edwin and Sarah were living in Delphos, Allen County, Ohio, ED# 213:

#153    Shirley, Edwin    m    48                    Works in Saw Mill    England

Edwin Shirley and Sarah Hall's five known children were:

1.1 Isabella S. Shirley, was born on 13 June 1854 in Lockport, Niagara County, New York and died on 7 August 1917.  She married twice; (1st) George Beebe and (2nd) James Henshaw.  James was born on 17 July 1839 and died on 9 January 1918.  James and Isabella are both buried on the family plot in Riverside Cemetery, in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

In the 1880 Federal Census of Delphos, Allen County, Ohio, the Beebe household listed:

#347  Beebe, George   m  30  Teamster  Mich  Mich  Mich

In the 1900 Federal Census Isabella and her second husband were listed in 4th Ward, Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, ED# 119, sheet 17B.  James Henshaw listed his occupation as a drayman, Isabella stated that she had given birth to no children, they both stated that they had been married for 11 years (~1899), the street address was listed as 418 Jasper Street.

In the 1910 Federal Census of 4th Ward, Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, ED# 146, sheet 3A, same street address as 1900, their household listed (Isabella and James both stated that they had been married for 21 years he stated that it was his 3rd marriage, Isabella stated that it was her 2nd; Isabella contradicted the 1900 census and stated that she had given birth to 2 living children; Sadie stated that she had been married for 11 years; she also stated that she had given birth to 2 living children):

1.2 George E. Shirley, was born in about 1857 in New York.  He married Edith May Roebuck, she was born on 16 May 1857 in Schoolcraft, Kalamazoo County, Michigan.  They were married in Van Wert County, Ohio and died on 10 October 1936 in Round Lake near Milford Michigan.  He and his wife both drowned.  They had one daughter:

1.2.1 Laura Adelaide Shirley, was born in November 1885 in Ohio.  She married Russell Clevenger.

George Houston and Cora Jane (Shirley) Houston, photos submitted by Bill Marshall.

1.3 Cora Jane Shirley, was born in Indiana on 11 August 1866 and died on 2 April 1926 (death record).

Cora married George Houston, (this was George's second marriage, his first wife was Ella Beebe, (marriage record).  George was born on 11 February 1858 and died on 1 December 1947 (death record).  George was the son of Thomas and Ann C. Houston.  George and Cora are both buried on the family plot in Riverside Cemetery, in Kalamazoo.

In the 1900 Federal Census George and Cora Houston were enumerated in 1st Ward, Kalamazoo, Michigan, ED#109, sheets 5B and 6A (George may have "fudged" his birth a little, it is difficult to make out, but it sure looks like 1862; both George and Cora stated that they had been married for 9 years, additionally Cora stated that she had not given birth to any children; the street address was listed as 716 Edwin Avenue, which is on the east side of Kalamazoo, south of East Main Street):

In the 1920 Federal Census of 1st Precinct, 1st Ward of Kalamazoo City, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, ED# 146, sheet 14A, street address listed as 646 Trimble Avenue (about a block east of their 1910 household) George and Cora J. Shirley, listed their ages as 62 and 53 respectively.  George listed his occupation as a shipping clerk for a manufacturing company.  They had no children listed in the 1920 household.

Cora died in 1926, I have not yet located George in the 1930 census.

1.4 Glenn Shirley, was born in about 1871 in Michigan.  In 1920 Glenn and wife Violet had moved out west and were located in Yakima City, Yakima County, Washington, ED# 221:

1.5 Nettie Shirley, was born on 24 May 1877 in Marion Township, Allen County, Ohio.  Nettie married Squire E. Sproul in about 1899.  The Sproul's were living in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio, ED# 59, sheet 3A, in the 1900 Federal Census (Nettie and Squire both stated that they had been married for one year, Nettie also stated that she had given birth to no children; street address was listed as 2017 Franklin Ave.):

In the 1920 Federal Census, Nettie and Squire were again enumerated in Kalamazoo, Precinct 16, Kalamazoo County, ED# 161, sheet 4A.  Squire listed his age as 47, occupation printer, Nettie listed her age as 42, Maynard was now 16 and in High School.  Squire apparently died before 1930.  Nettie listed her marital status as a widow in the 1930 census.  Nettie died in April 1951, Squire died in June 1924, they are both buried in Riverside Cemetery in Kalamazoo.  They had one son:

1.5.1 Maynard E. Sproul, was born on 13 January 1904 in Ohio and died on 15 March 1966.  He is buried with his parents in Riverside Cemetery, in Kalamazoo.  He apparently did marry, Louise W. Sproul is buried next to Maynard, Louise is also listed in the Michigan Death Index, 1971-1996, she died in Dearborn, Wayne County, Michigan, her place of residence was listed as Battle Creek, Calhoun County, Michigan.
Edwin and Sarah Shirley family data complied by Janet Christy Silvester, granddaughter of Laura Shirley, along with contributions from Bill Marshall in the Houston family line.

2. Elizabeth Shirley, was born in April 1837 in England and died on 14 December 1913 in Cook County, Illinois.  Elizabeth married Charles Gadey in New York.  Charles and Elizabeth were listed in the 1865 State Census of Orleans County, New York, age 36, born in England, occupation "miller", living with his wife Elizabeth, age 31, born in England.  Their household listed: sons Charles H., age 7, born in Orleans County; William E., age 3 years 7 months, also born in Orleans County.

In the 1870 Federal Census the "Gady" family was enumerated in the village of Schoolcraft, Kalamazoo County, Michigan.  Charles was 37, Elizabeth listed her age as 36.  He listed his occupation as an engineer in a mill.  There two sons, Charles and William were ages 12 and 8 respectively.

Charles died on 23 March 1880 and is buried with his in-laws, Edwin and Sophia (Pike) Shirley in Schoolcraft Cemetery (he is not listed in the Michigan Death Index).  Shortly after Charles death in March, Elizabeth moved to Chicago and was recorded living with her sons, Charles and William.  From the 1880 Federal Census of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois:

Gadey, Charles H.    m                   23  w [widowed]    New York    Engineer
           William A.    m    Brother    18   s                   New York    Engineer

Elizabeth Shirley and Charles Gadey's two children were:

2.1 Charles H. Gadey, was born in March 1857 in Orleans County, New York and died in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois on 10 February 1929.  Charles was married and widowed sometime between 1875 and 1880.  His known daughter from his (1st) marriage was:

2.1.1 Bessie E. Gadey, was born in March 1880, she is listed in the Illinois Death Index as Bessie E. "Gady", age at death, 3 months, date of death listed as 29 June 1880 in Cook County (the census was recorded on the 5th of June, she died 24 days later; there is also an Ettie Gadey listed in the Illinois Death Index, age at death 23 years, date of death listed as 28 March 1880, place of death listed as Cook County [possibly her mother]).
Charles household in the 1900 Federal Census of the 28th Ward of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, ED# 850, sheet 9A, enumerated on 7 June, is a little difficult to sort out.  He had remarried, his household on Jackson St. listed (the household numbers were crossed out about three times--Charles and his wife both stated that they had been married for 10 years; she stated that she had given birth to 1 living child and immigrated to the U.S. in 1880; Elizabeth, was widowed, and stated that she immigrated to the U.S. in 1860):

Marriages for Charles and William Gadey, are listed in the Illinois Marriage Index.  Charles married "Theala" Sutherland on 4 November 1882 in Cook County, Illinois.

In the 1910 Federal Census of 34th Ward, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, ED# 1461, sheet 1A, his household listed (Charles stated that this was his second marriage, Theala stated that it was her first, they both stated that they had been married for 28 years; Theala also stated that she had given birth to 1 living child; Irene and David both stated that they had been married for 4 years; irene also stated that she had given birth to 1 living child; Elizabeth stated that she was widowed and had given birth to 2 living children--which contradicts the 1900 census; Elizabeth also stated that she immigrated to the US in 1841; the street address was listed as 4015 West Jackson Street):

In the 1920 Federal Census Charles and Theala were recorded in Chicago, Cook County, ED# 2235, sheet 3B.  Charles was 61 and Thecla listed her age as 56.  His occupation is difficult to read, "engineer ___ office", street address listed as 4015 Jackson Blvd.

In 1930 Thecla was widowed at the same address in Chicago.  Thecla died on 16 April 1938 in Du Page County, Illinois (Illinois Death Index).  Charles' death notice from the Chicago Tribune dated 12 November 1929:

"GADEY - Charles H. Gadey, February 10, 1929, age 69 years, husband of Thecla L. Gadey, father of Mrs. Dr. D.W. Adams.  Funeral Wednesday, Feb. 13, at 2 p.m., from residence, 4015 Jackson-bvld."
Charles H. Gadey and Thecla Sutherland's daughter was:
2.1.2 Irene May Gadey, was born in May 1884 in Illinois.  Irene married David W. Adams in Lake County, Indiana on 26 October 1905 (Book L, page 147).  In the 1910 Federal Census they were living with her parents (see above).  In the 1920 Federal Census they were enumerated living with what were probably his parents in 13th Ward, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, ED# 772, sheet 5B (street address listed as 3930 Congress Street (looks like David E. should probably listed as a grandson):

#72  202  Adams, William E.  Head  74  Ohio  Ohio  Ohio  Conductor Railroad

In the 1930 Federal Census David and Irene were enumerated in Villa Park Village, York Township, Du Page County, Illinois, ED# 68, 20B.  David was still working as a dentist,  their son Arthur, age 13 was still at home.  David W. Adams and Irene May Gadey had two sons:

2.1.2.1 David E. Adams, was born in Illinois in about 1908.

2.1.2.2 Arthur G. Adams, was born in Illinois in about 1917.  His obituary from the Chicago Tribune dated 4 August 1996:

"Arthur G. Adams, 79, a retired Elmhurst dentist, died Wednesday in Elmhurst Memorial Hospital. He was a dentist for more than 40 years and a Villa Park resident for 25 years. He also was a former board president of Elmhurst School District 205. Mr. Adams is survived by his wife, Kathryn; two sons, Bruce and Douglas; a daughter, Wendy Mannina; and nine grandchildren. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Sunday in Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard."

2.2 William A. Gadey, was born in about 1862, in Orleans County, New York and probably died before 1900.  There are two marriages recorded in Illinois for William Gadey.  A William Gadey married Flora Madeson on 25 July 1882 in Pulaski County and a William Gadey also married Rose B. Renz on 24 February 1897 in Cook County.  Olive was born in 1883, so the first marriage seems to match, however, Flora's name is recorded as Julia in the 1900 and 1910 censuses.  The 1900 census data indicates that he had one daughter:

2.2.1 Olive Gadey, was born in October 1883 in Illinois.

3. John Shirley, stated in the 1900 Federal Census of Texas Township, Kalamazoo County, Michigan that he was born in England in September 1836 and that he immigrated to the United States in 1840.  Hannah M. Russell and John Shirley were married in Kalamazoo at the First Congregational Church on 28 February 1861 (marriage certificate).  Marie Mackey generously located Hannah Russell and her parents in the 1850 Federal Census of Kalamazoo, Michigan recorded on the 19th of July (all four of the Russell children had attended school that year):

#525 534      Elihu Russell     48      m    Miller          NY
                   Rebecca            50      f                        "
                   George             19      m                       "

                   Elihu                13      m                      Mich
                   Hannah            11       f                        "
Ten years later,in the 1860 Federal Census of the Village of Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, recorded on the 28th of June, the Russell household listed:
#444 443    Rebeccah Russell    60    f    Tailoress    200    New York
                 Abby                     26    f         "                   Michigan
                 Hannah                 21    f         "                        "
                 Elihu                     23   m    Carpenter   200        "
Hannah's father, Elihu Russell, apparently died before 1860.  Hannah's two brothers, George and Elihu Russell, both later lived in Portage Township, they both are listed in the 1880 census, married with large families of their own.

Hannah M. (Russell) Shirley stated on the 1900 Federal Census of Texas Township that she was born in February 1838 in Michigan, and that her parents were both born in New York.  Hannah died in 1907 and John Shirley died in the spring of 1904 on his farm in Texas Township.  John first appears in Michigan in the 1860 Federal Census, working on the farm of Allison Kinne.  John and Hannah had nine children (linked from his name).  John and Hannah are both buried in Hope Cemetery in Texas Township on 8th Street.

4. Samuel H. Shirley, was born in September 1840 in New York and died in 1919.  He married Lydia C. Belcher in 1863.  Lydia was born in August 1844 and died in 1917.  In the 1860 Federal Census he was single and listed in Kalamazoo, occupation listed as a farm laborer.

In the 1870 Federal Census of the Villiage of Schoolcraft, Kalamazoo County, Michigan his household listed:

#163 163    Shirly, Saml    31    m    Works in [?] Factory        " [New York]

From the 1880 Federal Census of Schoolcraft, Kalamazoo County, ED# 142:

In the 1900 Federal Census of Lake City, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, ED# 942, sheet 9A, enumerated on 6 June, his household listed (Samuel and Lydia both stated that they had been married for 36 years; Lydia stated that she had given birth to 5 children 4 of whom were still living; Lewis and Mary both stated that they had been married for 7 years; Mary stated that she had given birth to 2 living children; Minnie and Paul both stated that they had been married for 4 years; Minnie stated that she had not given birth to any children):
