Some researchers refer to this man as Elisha Huntley Beckwith, but we have found no, no, no! evidence that his name was anything more than Elisha Beckwith.  This mythical name appears to have originated from unsupported entries on FamilySearch.org and continues to be proliferated on the Internet.

Mary (Polly) Walker
Dau. of: James Walker

b: 1780 New York

m: Feb 26, 1795 Hancock, Worchester Co, NY

The biography of son Emory Walker Beckwith stated that Mary died in Hancock County, Illinois. According to the 1850 Census, she was living there in the home of her son, John.  John and family had left Hancock County by the time of the 1860 Census.  Mary was probably buried at the Hadley Cemetery in Fountain Green Township, but most of the tombstones there have been destroyed so we have no physical evidence.

Census Records 1840 and 1850

Joseph H. Borden was born about 1781 in Madison Co, New York, a son of Joshua and Elizabeth Pierce Borden, according to "Record of the Borden Family: A Historical and Genealogical Record of the Descendants of Rich and Joan Borden", "who arrived in Portsmouth [Rhode Island] in 1638". The author was Hattie Borden Weld, 1040 W. 36th St., Los Angeles, California. The preface is dated July 1, 1899.

It must be noted that Mrs. Weld reported that Joseph died in 1806, but then listed children born to Joseph and Philura between 1808 and 1833. (Perhaps the entry was simply a misprint.)

In addition, Mrs. Weld stated Philura's birth date as Apr 12, 1788.  This would indicate that Mary Walker was not Philura's mother, a circumstance not substantiated by any evidence Beckwith researchers have located.  However, we cannot ignore this piece of data, because the 1840 census listing for the household of Joseph "Bordon" of Oxford Township, Chenango County, New York, contains an entry for a female aged between 50 and 59 (ergo born between 1781 and 1790).

When the will of Philura's father was probated in 1846, Philura was named as the 'wife of Joseph Borden residing in oxford Chenango Co'.

Philura's age in the 1850 Federal Census is in conflict with the birth year of 1788.  Jos. H., 56, and "Lura" Borden, 55, were in the home of John B. Borden, reported by Mrs. Weld as their son.

Elisha Huntley Beckwith
b: Mar 9, 1797 New York
m: ca. 1825 in New York
d: Sep 6, 1843 Hancock Co, IL
burial: Hadley Cemetery, Hancock Co, IL

Although he was named as Huntley H. in the probate documents related to his father's will, his tombstone reads Elisha Huntly Beckwith.  To descendants who remained in Hancock County, he was known as Elisha Huntley Beckwith.  These descendants became aware of Hadley Cemetery, long abandoned, despoiled by time and livestock, when a distant cousin from California inquired about it in the 1960s.  It was at this time that they found the physical confirmation of the final resting place of their great-great-grandfather.

Abigail Huntley, was the maiden name of Elisha Huntley Beckwith's great-grandmother.
