GEORGE, John Henry, a retired farmer of Fountain Green Township, was formerly actively engaged in farming in this section, and as long as he lived owned a valuable farm here.  He was born in Ross County, Ohio, June 19, 1853, a son of Jacob and Christina (George) George, born in Germany.  They came to the United States in 1849, and were married in Ohio, October 18, 1849, residing there until the fall of 1854, when they came further west, and bought a 40 acre farm in Hire Township, McDonough County.  Later they sold this farm and bought eighty acres in the same township, where both died, she July 21, 1898, and he January 18, 1909.

Their [Jacob and Christina's] children were as follows: Louis, who died in 1863; Louisa, who was Mrs. Newton Duke, died in 1878; Milton, who died in 1880; Catherine, who was Mrs. Cyrus Fisher [Josiah Fisher], died in 1906; Clara, who was Mrs. Philip Sparrow, died December 25, 1912; John Henry, who died December 25, 1918; William, who lives in Tennessee Township; Mariah, who is Mrs. Joseph Morgan of Colchester, Ill., and Dora, who is Mrs. Charles Riser, lives on the homestead in Hire Township.

John Henry George spent his boyhood on his father's farm, where he lived until his marriage, which occurred November 23, 1876, when he was united to Ida L. Bloyd, born in Fountain Green Township.  Mr. and Mrs. George had the following children born to them: Florence, who is Mrs. Gilbert Jones, of Wall Lake, Iowa; Jacob B., who lives at Burnside, Ill.; Lucretia, who died in infancy; and Clarence W., who died near the age of twenty years.

Mrs. George died June 2, 1884.  On October 3, 1889, Mr. George was married (second) to Mary Ellen Greenley, born September 25, 1871, in Pennsylvania, a daughter of Emanuel B., and Sarah (Winkleman) Greenley, born in Pennsylvania, who came to Fountain Green Township in 1875.  By his second marriage, Mr. George had the following children: Henry E., who lives in Fountain Green Township, married Bessie Bond; Christina May, who is Mrs. Vernon Carmack of Blandinsville, Ill.; Dora Pearl and Raymond Roy, both of whom are at home; Emanuel Dewey, who married Reva Fisher; and Ernest Cecil, who is at home.

After his first marriage, Mr. George assisted his father for a few years and then bought fifty-six acres of land in Fountain Green Township, on which he erected new buildings and made many improvements.  He kept adding to his farm until he owned 376 acres, all improved, on which he did general farming until 1916, when he retired, his sons now conducting the farm, although he continued to reside on it.  There he died December 25, 1918.  Mr. George attended the Methodist Episcopal Church.  He was a Democrat, but has not cared for office.  His fraternal affiliation was with the Modern Woodmen of America, at Fountain Green.  A man widely and favorably known, he stood very high in his neighborhood.

The above biography is one of five references found so far that name John's mother as Christina. When John married for the second time in 1889, his mother's given name was recorded as Catharine.  See: Jacob and Christina George for further information.

When John and Ida L. Bloyd were married on November 23, 1876, Ida was not quite 20.  She was born October 4, 1856 (date calculated from her tombstone inscription), the daughter of Benjamin Bloyd and his first wife, Emeline Hobart.  Marriage License

John and Ida set up housekeeping and had four children before Ida's untimely death.  She was buried at Friendship Cemetery.  She left a grieving husband and three surviving little ones.  The George children were:

i. Florence Ardella George, born September 4, 1877, Hire Township, McDonough County, Illinois.  She died October 13, 1956, and was buried at Friendship Cemetery.

ii. Jacob B. George, born about 1880 in Hire Township.

iii. Lucretia George, born January 2, 1882, died January 28, 1882, burial at Friendship Cemetery.

iv. Clarence W. George, born April 4, 1883, died January 18, 1903, burial at Friendship Cemetery.

From the History of McDonough County, Illinois, 1885, a biography of John's father, Jacob (1829-1909), stated that the children made their home with Jacob and his wife after Ida's death. Five years later John remarried.  On October 3, 1889, he wed Mary Ellen Greenley, the 18 year old daughter of Emanuel B. and Sarah (Winkleman) Greenly, both natives of Pennsylvania.  Police Magistrate George W. Jones performed the marriage at Carthage. Witnesses were Alice D. Green and Charles J. Scofield.  Marriage Documents

Mary was born in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, perhaps in Point Township.  Her parents left that state with their five youngsters after 1876, based on the age and birth location of Mary's youngest sister, Gertie (born in late December of 1876 in Pennsylvania), and settled in Hancock County.  Mary's father consistently used the spelling Greenly after he left home; it seems that Mary spelled her maiden name Greenley.

Was there ever a parent who didn't worry when his or her child fell in with bad company?  Mary's mother died in 1879 and the following year Emanuel Greenly remarried.  He subsequently moved to Iowa, being counted in Monroe County (1885), Appanoose County (1895), and Moravia, Appanoose County, in 1900.  Mary must have lived in Moravia prior to her marriage.  In a letter to Mary's younger sister, Gertie, Emanuel colorfully reported that had it not been for his second wife's intervention, Mary would have "gone to the dogs".  To view early Greenly and Winkleman census transcriptions and to read Emanuel's letter, follow the above link to Emanuel and Sarah.

All of John and Mary's six children were probably born in Fountain Green Township:

i. Henry E. George, born August 10, 1890.  He died June 2, 1965, and was buried at Glade City Cemetery, Blandinsville, McDonough County, Illinois.

ii. Christine May George, born May 2, 1892, died June 3, 1975, burial at Glade City Cemetery.

iii. Dora P. George, born September 10, 1894.  She died July 7, 1981, burial at LaHarpe Township Cemetery, LaHarpe, Hancock County.

iv. Raymond Roy George, born August 23, 1896, died January 20, 1966.  He married Mabel May Allen on March 15, 1921, at Blandinsville.  Mabel was born April 9, 1897, at Seville, Fulton County, Illinois, died August 27, 1986, at her home in Blandinsville.  Raymond and Mabel are buried at Glade City Cemetery, along with their daughter, Beverly Adalie (June 18, 1928 - December 2, 1938).  One surviving daughter, Elgin.

v. Emanuel Dewey George, born about 1898.  He died after April 1, 1930.

vi. Cecil Ernest George (named above as Ernest Cecil), born in 1900, died in 1960, burial at Friendship Cemetery.

Mary Greenley George died October 02, 1942, at Blandinsville, McDonough County, and was buried at Friendship Cemetery.
