FOUNTAIN GREEN CEMETERY HANCOCK COUNTY, ILLINOIS |

In 1840 Watson and Cynthia Fabun, originally from Vermont and New York, may have been living in Lorain County, Ohio, in 1840; listed there was the household of "Watson Fabin".
They were first counted in Hancock County, Illinois, in the 1850 Federal Census. It was during 1850 that the townships were named. The border line between Fountain Green Township to the north, and Hancock Township to the south, is represented by the dark line passing below the name Webster on this map segment. Watson and Cynthia were enumerated in proximity to Anthony Duffy and Joel Howd. Duffy's property was located in adjacent sections 5 and 8 of Hancock Township, west of present day Majorville Cemetery (indicated by the label Church and the small square in Section 2 of Hancock Township). Joel Howd had established a tailoring business in Webster a few years prior to 1850. We can make a reasonable guess that the Fabuns were living near those families, perhaps on the Fountain Green Township side since that's where Watson was counted in 1860. Calculating from the tombstone inscription, Cynthia (maiden name undetermined), was born May 16, 1797. She died in 1851 and was buried at Fountain Green Cemetery. On March 30, 1856, Watson married Mrs. Harriet Dunham, nee Hobart, widow of Christopher N. Dunham. Harriet had a daughter by Christopher: Lydia, born in 1849. Given the discrepancies, it's a judgment call as to whether or not the 1860 census listing transcribed below was actually for Watson and Harriet Fabun, but it's the only one from that year that comes close to matching the little family and there are enough similarities that it seems likely. We doubt that 18 year old "Beaty" was Watson's son since he was not counted with Watson and Cynthia in 1850 (and also not in the tentative 1840 listing for Watson Fabin). If Beaty's surname was actually Fabun, perhaps he was a nephew. Lydia Dunham married Andrew Jackson Hasten in 1866. In 1870 the Fabuns and Hastens were counted in the household of Harvey Thompson in Fountain Green Township. Watson, born September 4, 1805 (based on the tombstone inscription), was 20 some years Harriet's senior. He died on August 16, 1879, and was buried at Fountain Green Cemetery next to Cynthia. The Mortality Schedule accompanying the 1880 Census of Fountain Green reported the cause of death was paralysis; he was attended by Dr. Ferris. Also from the Mortality Schedule: - Watson Faburn, 73, male, white, married, born VT, both parents born VT, carpenter, died in August [1879], years in the county - 33 - He died at the home of Robert and Bothilla J. Wilson. They were apparently near neighbors of both Lydia and A. J. Hasten and Harriet, as the three residences were consecutively numbered in the 1880 census. Harriet did not remarry. She died November 25, 1907, and was buried at Webster Cemetery, also in Fountain Green Township. She shares a tombstone there with her parents and a sister. |
