Samuel Glass and Rachel Marshall married in 1833 at the Path Valley Presbyterian Church in Fannettsburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania.  She is believed to have been the daughter of Robert Marshall and Elizabeth Fitzsimmons.  Between 1835 and 1838, with two sons barely more than toddlers, Samuel and Rachel made their way to Illinois.

In the 1840 Federal Census they were counted among families known to have lived in Township 6 North, 5 West, later named Fountain Green Township.  If they came directly to Hancock County from Pennsylvania, we can reasonably presume that all children after the oldest two boys were born in that same township.

When the Presbyterian Church at Fountain Green was first organized in 1840, Samuel and Rachel became members of the congregation.

An 1859 plat map showed Samuel farming on approximately 120 acres in Fountain Green Township, 80 of those acres occupying the west half of the southwest quarter of section 18, plus 40 acres immediately to the south in adjacent section 19.  A plat map created in 1874, at right, reveals that Samuel had reduced his holdings to the 80 acres in section 18.  His son, James, was farming on the acreage in section 19 (not illustrated on this page).  Click here for another perspective on where Samuel's land was located within the boundaries of the township.  The farm was northwest of the villages of Webster and Fountain Green, and southeast of LaCrosse (in Pilot Grove Township).

The early 1860s were years of loss.  Samuel and Rachel buried a son in 1860, sent two sons off to serve in the Union Army and grieved the death of one in 1863, lost a granddaughter in 1862 and another in 1863, and a daughter-in-law in 1864.

From a LaCrosse local news column, published November 23, 1873:

The burning of Samuel Glass' house was noted in "The Republican" last week.  The family was home in bed.  The fire was discovered about 2 o'clock in the morning and was under such headway that they only succeeded in saving a small remnant of bed clothing.  In 3 days Mr. Glass with the assistance of neighbors, had timber on the ground and logs at Leach's mill for another building.  Mr. Leach did the sawing without charge.  Before the close of this week the house, 16 x 26, 2 stories will be ready for the plasterers.  Mr. Glass has much valuable assistance from his neighbors and from the merchants of La Harpe, LaCrosse and Ft. Green.

Samuel and Rachel eventually joined their loved ones when they, too, were buried at Fountain Green Cemetery.

The month and day of Rachel's death was read many years ago as August 21, as displayed above. There's a conflict between that date and the information recorded on the mortality schedule prepared in conjunction with the 1880 Federal Census of Fountain Green Township.  That document reported she died from enteritis at the home of her son, Robert M. Glass, in Fountain Green Township in June of 1879.  We believe the tombstone bears the correct date: The LaHarper published on August 22, 1879, reported the death of Mrs. Samuel Glass.

Their known children were:

i. Robert M. Glass, born in 1834 in Pennsylvania.  He died in 1907 and was buried at Webster Cemetery, also located in Fountain Green Township.

ii. James M. Glass, born December 26, 1835* in Pennsylvania.  He died October 8, 1901, burial in LaHarpe City Cemetery, LaHarpe, Hancock County.

iii. George Washington Glass, born September 28, 1838*, in Hancock County, lost his life at Youngs Point, Louisiana, on March 13, 1863, a Civil War casualty.  Two markers were placed for him at Fountain Green Cemetery, a family stone and a military marker.

iv. John McGinley Glass, born February 25, 1840*, died May 8, 1860, burial at Fountain Green Cemetery.

v. Sarah E. Glass, born about 1843.

vi. Wesley William Glass, born about 1849.

vii. Silas Franklin Glass, born about 1852.
