Elizabeth Campbell was born in Kortright, New York, March 28, 1811; was married to Matthew McClaughry Sept. 17, 1853; died at her home in Fountain Green, Feb. 24, 1899, aged 87 years, 10 months and 26 days. In early life she was member of the Dutch Reform church, known as the Old Fulton Street church, New York City. Later her membership was transferred to Ft. Green, where, in company with her husband, Matthew McClaughry, and others, organized the United Presbyterian church. On the dissolution of this church she united with the Presbyterian church, of which she had since been an earnest and zealous member. A life such as Aunt Eliza's, as she was familiarly known, has been, does not need eulogy. She spent the best part of her life in our midst, and everyone who was fortunate to come in contact with her, felt that it was to have the sympathy of a true christian woman. The funeral took place from her late home, conducted by Rev. Puch, after which the remains were laid reverently to rest by the side of her husband in Ft. Green cemetery. There were many beautiful floral offerings. The relatives and friends have the sympathy of the cammunity.
unknown original news source, verbatim transcription. Researcher Cora R. Swift believed that Elizabeth Campbell was a sister to Mary J. Campbell (ca. 1821-1867), who married Henry Mull. So far the only reference to support this is that in 1880 Elizabeth, reported as an aunt, was making her home with Henry and Mary's daughter, Fannie, and Fannie's husband, Silas Wright Prentiss.
