JACOB CALLIHAN 1844-1925
MARY CATHERINE WEISER 1851-1935

Author - Marcia Farina

Jacob Callihan was born March 14, 1844, in Pennsylvania, to Charles and Susannah (Fass) Callihan.  He died April 9, 1925, at his home in Fountain Green Township (perhaps in the village of Fountain Green), Hancock County, Illinois, and was buried at Moss Ridge Cemetery, Carthage, Hancock County.  Obituary

Jacob's obituary reported that he was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, but when his daughter, Kathryn, applied for membership in the D.A.R. (through her mother's lineage) in 1966, she stated her father had been born in Northumberland County (the same county in which he was later married) .

Also from both Jacob's and his wife's obituaries, the implication is that his family first arrived in Hancock County, Illinois, in 1872.  In fact, the family was in Hancock County at the time of the 1850 Federal Census enumeration.  They went back to Pennsylvania for a number of years, then returned to Hancock County where several of Charles Callihan's siblings were still living.  The obituary of Elizabeth Callihan Layton, Jacob's sister, stated the family returned to Hancock County in 1871.

Mary Catherine Weiser was born April 23, 1851, at Sunbury, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. In 1869, Mary was a resident of Point Township in Northumberland County.  She and Jacob were married on April 22, 1869, and she and Jacob set up housekeeping there near her parents, Solomon Weiser and Mary A. Miller.  Mary's obituary stated that she and Jacob came to Hancock County in 1872.

By 1880 Jacob and Mary and two of their children were living in Hancock Township; at some point they relocated to a home apparently in the village of Fountain Green, Fountain Green Township, where they spent the rest of their lives.

Mary died May 26, 1935, at her home and was also buried at Moss Ridge Cemetery.  Obituaries

Their children were:

i. George Hemperly Callihan, born September 9, 1870, in or near Sunbury, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.  He died June 24, 1919, at Carthage in Hancock County.

ii. Charlie Callihan was mentioned by name in the obituaries of his parents.  He died "in infancy".  There is a tombstone in Fountain Green Cemetery for Charley Callihan.  When read in the 1960's, the inscription was interpreted as Son of L. & M. G. Callihan, died Sept. 8, 1876, aged 4 Ys. 10 Ms. 4 Ds., the number of days or perhaps the entire age being in question.  This inscription calculates to a birth date of November 4, 1871.  We have found no Callihan family headed by parents L. and H. G.  It seems likely that the inscription is/was J. & M. C. Callihan, and that this marker was placed for Jacob's and Mary's son.  If so, and if the details in Jacob's obituary were accurate, Charlie would have been born in Northumberland, Pennsylvania, and would have been a baby when his parents traveled west to Hancock County, Illinois.

iii. Emma C. Callihan, born between 1872 and 1875 in Hancock County, Illinois.  She died February 12, 1952.  She never married, apparently spent her life in the teaching profession. From Chat's Webster column, February 12, 1890: "Prof. L. P. Cravens conducted his central examination at this place today.  Of those present, Miss Emma Callihan, of Ft. Green, and Miss Ella Wright, of this school, passed the examination and received their diplomas.  Allen Geddes, one of Emma's pupils at Fountain Green, remembered her with fondness in his essay Early Fountain Green Schools.  For the 1891-1892 and 1892-1893 school terms, Emma was teaching in the Liberty neighborhood in Hancock Township.  In 1898, she was at Union No. 7.  In later years she was the principal at a grade school in Kewanee, Henry County, Illinois.

iv. Frank P. Callihan, born about January 1879, probably in Hancock Township.  He died there in August of the same year from acute dysentery, according to the Mortality Schedule prepared along with the 1880 Federal Census of Hancock Township.  He was mentioned by name in the obituaries of his parents and his sister, Kathryn.

v. Lin Douglas Callihan, born March 17, 1882, at Fountain Green.  He died May 21, 1967, at Macomb, McDonough County, Illinois.  Burial at LaHarpe Township Cemetery, Hancock County, Illinois.

vi.

vii.

Tressler W. Callihan, born about 1887, probably in the village Fountain Green. He died between May 26, 1935, and May 21, 1967.

Kathryn Grace Callihan, born December 3, 1895, at Fountain Green.  She died in February of 1979 at Macomb, burial at Moss Ridge Cemetery in Carthage.  Kathryn also devoted her life to teaching and was active in a number of organizations.  She was the last surviving Callihan sibling.
