Nicholas Chambers Fiscus was born about 1838, the son of William Fiscus and Jane McDaniels. The Fiscuses were in Pike Township, Brown County, Ohio, in 1840 and 1850.  Before 1860 they made their way to Fountain Green Township, Hancock County, Illinois, where Chambers spent his young manhood.  Most likely he worked on his father's farm until 1862, when he enlisted in the Union Army.

Along with many local men, he served in Company A of the 118th Illinois Infantry.  From the Muster and Descriptive Rolls compiled by the Illinois Adjutant General's Office:

Chambers returned home.  On February 20, 1867, he married Sarah C. Riley, daughter of William Riley, then deceased, and Mary Ann Myres, from Pennsylvania and Maryland, respectively.  Sarah was born in Maryland about 1850.

Chambers and Sarah became the parents of two daughters in quick succession and soon thereafter relocated to Canville Township, Neosho County, Kansas.  A third daughter was born in Kansas. Like his elder brother, Chambers was a teacher.

After fortunately surviving over three years service during the bitter war, Chambers was not to enjoy a long life of health and happiness.

Sarah died on September 14, 1877; we have not determined where she died.  Not quite two years later Chambers was gone, a victim of consumption.  He died in his father's home in January of 1879 according to the Mortality Schedule prepared in conjunction with the 1880 Federal Census.  We do not know where Sarah and Chambers were buried.

The Fiscus daughters were:

i. Hattie M. Fiscus, born about 1867 in Illinois, probably Fountain Green Township.  She died October 20, 1888, in California, apparently near San Jose.  Her remains lie in an unmarked grave at Oak Hill Memorial Park, San Jose.

When Hattie married in 1883, Jacob Patton was listed as her guardian.

ii. Lucy D. Fiscus, born about 1869, probably in Fountain Green Township.  The death of one Lucy Fiscus was reported in The LaHarper published March 18, 1887.  We would expect to find Lucy buried near her father.

iii. Cora Fiscus, born about 1872 in Kansas, died in 1952, burial at Beulah Cemetery, Colby, Thomas County, Kansas.

In 1880 Cora was listed as the adopted daughter of above mentioned Jacob Patton (ca. 1844-1895) and his wife, the former Frances Caroline McLane, residents of LaHarpe Township, Hancock County.  Jacob's family had been counted in Pike Township, Brown County, Ohio, in 1860, the same area the Fiscus family had called home before coming to Illinois.  In 1900 the widowed Frances Patton was living next to Cora and her family in Colby, Kansas.
