Hire Township

Hainline, Jacob, one of the oldest representatives of the agricultural class in McDonough County, Ill., whose home is in Hire Township, was born in Montgomery County, Ky., October 26, 1836, the son of Jacob and Celia (Cockrell) Hainline, who were natives of the same State.  Jacob Hainline, Sr., came to McDonough County in 1838, and applied himself to farming in Hire Township for the remainder of his life.  He died in 1865.  [1864 according to his obituary.]

The subject of this sketch accompanied his parents to this county and has lived in Hire Township ever since.  His farm, which contains about 500 acres, is situated in Section 17.  On this Mr. Hainline has made all the improvements.  He is engaged in general farming, and also raises stock to some extent.  On January 12, 1859 [1860], Mr. Hainline was united in marriage with Kate Branham, who was born in Missouri and came to Hancock County, Ill., when she was a baby. The children resulting from this union were as follows: Ella (Mrs. John Ellrich) [Ullrich], Agnes, Grace (wife of W. H. Love), Irma and Ethel.  Politically Mr. Hainline belongs to the Republican party.

The substantial landed possessions acquired by Mr. Hainline are the clearest evidence of the industry, perseverance and frugality which have been the distinguishing characteristics of his long residence in McDonough County.  These qualities have been fitly supplemented by his everywhere recognized honesty and reliability.

When the Hainlines first came to McDonough County, the open prairie on which they settled had no name.  In 1856 the township was organized and named Rock Creek, then renamed Hire in 1857.

The biography states that Catharine (known as Kate and also found as Elizabeth C.) was born in Missouri and that her parents came to Illinois shortly thereafter, and Catharine did report Missouri as her birthplace in two census enumerations.  However, her parents, Thomas Branham and Martina Gough, were married in Hancock County, Illinois, in 1836, and her elder siblings, Margaret (born about 1837), and Peter B. (born about 1838), consistently reported their birthplaces as Illinois. Perhaps the family moved to Missouri for a time and then returned to Illinois, or maybe they were visiting in Missouri when Catharine was born.

Kate died in 1913, Jacob in 1914. They are buried at what is now called the South Cemetery, Hire Township, McDonough County, Illinois, just south of Blandinsville. Their impressive marker is every bit as imposing as it looks in this picture.
