William Morris Anderson was a married man with a wife and two little boys when the Civil War erupted. Nevertheless, he signed up for a one year hitch in the Union Army. The following information is from the Muster and Descriptive Rolls compiled by the Illinois Adjutant General's Office.
Name ANDERSON, WILLIAM M
Personal Characteristics
Service Record
We do not know whether Susan stayed on their property and maintained the farm, or whether there were kinfolk close by to help her for the year that William was gone. There were no other Andersons and no Timbermans in Hancock Township in 1860. William and Susan's children were probably all born on the home farm in Hancock Township:
From The Republican, Carthage, Illinois, October 1892: Mrs. Susan Anderson, of Ft. Green, called at this office Monday for bill for a sale at her place Oct. 22. From The Republican, Carthage, Illinois, October 5, 1898, Chat's Webster column: Mrs. Susan Anderson is visiting relatives in Hamilton, Ohio. |
