James Grover Campbell was probably born in Hancock Township, Hancock County, Illinois, the son of John and Agnes Mort Campbell.  He was the unfortunate victim of a physical disability.  In the one census record in which his name appears, he was the only child in the home who was not shown to have attended school, but he was reported as being able to read and write.
