James L. Day Dies Near Ftn. Green

James Lewis Day, oldest son of J. W. and Ella Frances [Florence] Yetter Day, was born one and one-half miles south of Fountain Green, Illinois, September 4, 1887 and passed away December 9, 1944.

He was married to Beatrice Moore in 1908.  To this union two sons were born, William, in the United States Navy now in the Philippine area, and Arlin of Macomb, who mourn the passing of a kind and loving father.  Jimmie, Arlin's young son, was his grandfather's pride and joy.  His wife passed away in 1931.  Only two of the J. W. Day family remain, Mrs. Rubie Hobart of near Fountain Green and Lawrence of near Colchester.

Jim was a farmer and stock raiser living first on the farm now owned by Russell Meyers, then on a farm belonging to his father south of Fountain Green.

In 1912, thinking a change of climate would be of benefit to Beatrice, they moved to Colorado and later on to Utah, but as there was no improvement they came back to Illinois and bought a farm west of Joetta where he farmed with the help of his sons.

He had been in poor health for the past year and a half.  Sometimes too ill be about and then recovering and going about his work.  Jim always had a cheery greeting for those he met and will be missed by his family, friends and neighbors.

Funeral services and burial were held at Majorville on December 19th at 2 p. m. with the pastor, Rev. Milton Wilson, delivering the memorial and Herbert Hulson rendering two favorite selections of the family with Mrs. Hulson, piano accompanist.

The Carthage Gazette published an obituary on December 15, 1944.  Excerpted from that item:

Farmer Suffers Heart Attack in Pasture, Dies

James L. Day, farmer in the Joetta community west of Colchester, died following a heart attack suffered while he was working in a pasture on his farm about 8:00 o'clock Friday night, Dec. 8.  He had gone into the pasture to feed cattle, accompanied by Mrs. Mae Mort, whose farm adjoins his. Death was caused by a heart attack.  Mr. Day had been in poor health for about a year.

He was born September 4, 1887, near Fountain Green to John William and Ella (Yetter) Day. His wife, Beatrice Moore, died in 1931.

An image of the estate claim date notice published in the newspaper after James died. It identifies Arlin F. Day as the administrator.

Beatrice's maiden name was most often spelled Moor. She was the daughter of Lewis Henry Moor (son of Christopher Moor and Margaret Cameron), and Belle B. Arlin.  Belle's parents' names are found as Willard and William H. Arlin, and Ada and Adelaide Pierce.  Belle's brother was Byron A. Arlin (1862-1918).

There was a close connection, not yet unraveled, between Belle and William C. and Eliza (nee Reece) Cratsenberg, who lived for many years in Fountain Green Township.  When Belle married Lewis Moor, William Cratsenberg sent the following note to the County Clerk:

Fountain Green, November 9, 1887

To the County Clerk of Hancock Co [illegible word] Sir this is to certify that Belle B Arlin known as Belle Cratsenberg is twenty one years old the 24th day of last August that all parties are willing for her to marry L H Moor who is the barer of this Note to you.

Wm. C. Cratsenberg

P S
I would ask you if it would be right to put the name known as Belle Cratsenberg put it in the licence if not omit it
Yours with Respect To the County Clerk
Wm. C. Cratsenberg

Belle died in 1897 and was buried in the Alton Cemetery in Fountain Green Township.  There was a report of her death published in The LaHarper on May 28, 1897.  The inscription on her tombstone reads:

W. C. Cratsenberg
1828-1899
Eliza, his wife
1834 -
Our Dau.
Bell B. Moor
1866 - 1897

In 1910, Beatrice's sister, Florine, was living with the widowed Eliza.  Florine was listed as a granddaughter.

The children of James L. Day and Beatrice Moor were:

i. James William Day, born December 7, 1908.  While his obituary stated he was born in Fountain Green, census records indicate it's more likely he was born in Hancock Township. Bill died February 27, 1999, at Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois.  Burial at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, Galesburg, Illinois.

He married first Forrest E. Gipe in 1933.  She died in 1972.  He later married Irene Nichols Kenney.  Excerpted from his obituary, published in the Journal Star, Peoria, Illinois, March 1, 1999:
