John Julius Gustavis Furchtbar was born in Germany in 1832 and, according to the 1900 Federal Census, came to the United States in 1840.  Efforts to locate him in 1850 have been unsuccessful.

Frances Maria Ellis, daughter of William B. and Elizabeth Ellis, natives of Virginia, was born in 1841 in Schuyler County, Illinois.  The family was still in Schuyler County in 1850, but by June 1, 1860, had relocated to St. Mary's Township, Hancock County, Illinois.

John and Frances were married on December 8, 1864, by Rev. Joseph Botts.  Marriage License

Based on the obituary of their fifth son, they lived in McDonough County until about 1882, then moved to Hancock County.

Their children were:

i. George E. Furchtbar, born in McDonough County in 1865, died in 1887 in Hancock County.  Burial at Majorville Cemetery.

ii. Fredric William Furchtbar, born November 21, 1867, in McDonough County, died July 13, 1873.  Burial at Argyle Cemetery, McDonough County.  Find A Grave

iii. Bismark G. Furchtbar, born in 1869 in McDonough County, died in 1951.  He was buried at Majorville Cemetery.

iv. Charles A. Furchtbar, born in 1872 in McDonough County.

From Chat's Webster column in The Republican, February 11, 1903, "Our tax collector, Chas. Finchtbar, now has his tax books and will be at Joetta each Saturday."

About 1909 Charles married the former Cora B. Creasey, widow of Robert Terrill (1864-1903).  Cora was in 1868, probably in Hire Township, McDonough County.  She was the daughter of Sarah Lavinda Creasey.

By April 15, 1910, Charles and Cora had established themselves in Beggs, Okmulgee County, Oklahoma.  Living with them were two of Cora's four surviving children from her first marriage.  All of the Terrill children were probably born in Colchester, McDonough County.  One child was born to Charles and Cora.

Charles died in 1941, Cora died in 1947.  They were laid to rest at Beggs Cemetery.

--An infant Terrill son had died on April 10, 1888, and was buried at Mt. Auburn Cemetery, in Colchester.

--Elmer Terrill was born April 15, 1890 (according to his WWI Selective Service registration).

--Alleyne Terrill was born September 11, 1894, died in March of 1975.  Last known address according to Social Security records: Beggs, Okmulgee County. She married Paul McTague (1892-1963).  They are both buried at Beggs Cemetery.

--Garrett R. Terrill was born January 30, 1897 (according to his WWI Selective Service registration), died in March of 1975.  Last known address according to Social Security records: Tulsa, Tulsa County, Oklahoma.

--Lenore Terrill was born January 30, 1901, died November 13, 1919.  Burial at Beggs Cemetery.

--Grace Eloise Furchtbar was born May 27, 1912, died December 15, 1914.  Burial at Beggs Cemetery.

v. John Julius Furchtbar, born June 22, 1876, in McDonough County, died January 2, 1912, at his home near Joetta in Hancock County.  Interment at Majorville Cemetery.

vi. James Henry Furchtbar, born August 31, 1879, in McDonough County.  James went to Montana to seek his fortune.

About 1906 he married Hilga Dahl from Minnesota, daughter of Hans and Ellina Dahl (given names from the 1900 census), immigrants from Norway.  There is a disparity in records reporting Hilga's date of birth, varying from about 1883 to September 12, 1890.

James and Hilga had one son before parting company:

--Ellis J. Furchtbar was born January 27, 1909, in Montana.  He died April 10, 2005, last address according to Social Security records: Kingman, Mohave County, Arizona. Burial at Mountain View Cemetery, Kingman, next to his wife, Mary.  Find A Grave

Hilga subsequently married Samuel Henry Dix (April 12, 1895 - November 2, 1967).  She died October 27, 1978, in Multnomah County, Oregon, interment at Lincoln Memorial Park, Portland, Multnoma County.  Find A Grave

In 1920 James was in Newport, Jackson County, Arkansas - a long way from Montana. We lose track of him in 1930.

He died in 1958 and was buried at Majorville Cemetery.

vii. Emma V. Furchtbar, born in 1882, died in 1962, the last surviving sibling.  Burial at Majorville Cemetery.

viii. Mary F. Furchtbar, born in 1884, probably in Hancock County, died in 1959.  She, too, was buried at Majorville Cemetery.
