John Julius Gustavis Furchtbar was born in Germany in 1832 and, according to the 1900 Federal Census, came to the United States in 1840. Efforts to locate him in 1850 have been unsuccessful.
Frances Maria Ellis, daughter of William B. and Elizabeth Ellis, natives of Virginia, was born in 1841 in Schuyler County, Illinois. The family was still in Schuyler County in 1850, but by June 1, 1860, had relocated to St. Mary's Township, Hancock County, Illinois. John and Frances were married on December 8, 1864, by Rev. Joseph Botts. Marriage License Based on the obituary of their fifth son, they lived in McDonough County until about 1882, then moved to Hancock County. Their children were:
