George W. Hamilton and Polly Ann Owings were married in Ripley County, Indiana, on February 7, 1844.  Her name appears as Polly in every record except the 1900 Federal Census, in which she was named Elizabeth.

They began their family in Indiana and from that point on, George and Polly were frequently on the move.  In 1850, '60, '70, '80 and 1900, they were counted in different locations.

There is some evidence that George was the son of William and Elizabeth Hamilton, both originally from Kentucky.  And on the same 1840 census page on which the William Hamilton family appeared, there were two "Owens" households.  We do not know if Polly was the daughter of the Mary "Owens", whose household was counted immediately following that of William Hamilton, but it's a possibility.

There may also have been some kinship between Polly Owings and Martha Owings, wife of James Williams.  It appears that George Hamilton's mother, Elizabeth (maiden name unknown) is buried at New Boston Cemetery, Lee County, Iowa.  Martha Owings and James Williams are reported to have married in New Boston, Lee County, Iowa.

The Hamilton children were:

i. William A. Hamilton, born January 23, 1845, in Indiana, died October 18, 1872, probably in Hancock County, Illinois.  Buried at Majorville Cemetery.

ii. Asenath Hamilton, born about 1847 in Indiana.

iii. Mary Elizabeth Hamilton, born June 15, 1848, in Indiana.  She died November 6, 1928, and was buried in Kossuth Cemetery, Yellow Spring Township, Des Moines County, Iowa.

iv. Margaret Hamilton, born about 1850 in Iowa.  She married William Burch Houck, a Civil War veteran from Pennsylvania, on February 20, 1873.  Their little son, George, is buried at Majorville Cemetery.

The Houcks lived for a number of years in the village of Tennessee, McDonough County, where William was a blacksmith.

In 1891 he was granted a disability pension and in the 1900 Federal Census no occupation was reported for him.  Two of the Houck daughters were teachers but they had been unemployed for several months.

Before 1910 they moved to Berwick Township, Warren County, Illinois.  In that census William reported "own income" to the question of occupation.  The eldest daughter was the Postmistress for the Berwick Post Office and two were teaching.

Margaret filed for and was granted a widow's pension in 1918.  She died at Monmouth, Warren County, on September 14, 1928.

v. John J. Hamilton, born January 30, 1852, in Iowa, died February 20, 1864, probably in Hancock County.  Burial at Majorville Cemetery.

vi. George W. Hamilton, born about 1858 in Iowa.  He died October 14, 1943, in Carthage Township, Hancock County.

vii. Samuel O. Hamilton, born about 1860 in Iowa.  He apparently perished before June 1, 1870.

viii. Elmyra (or Almira), born about 1866 in Illinois.

ix. Asa E. Hamilton, born about 1869 in Illinois.  He died August 17, 1945, at Plymouth, Hancock County.
