A small map illustrating the location of Mercer County, Illinois. In 1850 Margaret J. Brownlee was residing in the home of her father, James Brownlee, in Mercer County, Illinois.  Also in the household were two brothers, Jackson and Harrison, and one sister, Mary.  In the next household was a third sister and her husband, Sarah C. and James "Nowles". The Brownlees had migrated west from Washington County, Pennsylvania. These five children were James' children by his third wife; he died later that year.

Margaret married Delos W. Allen in Henderson County, Illinois, about September 25, 1858.

According to the obituary of their one surviving son, Lewis Lamoine Allen, Delos and Margaret came to Webster, Hancock County, Illinois, when Lewis was a small boy. Another son was born there, Eugene, who died in infancy.  In the 1900 census Margaret reported only one child, but in 1910 she did report two.

Delos was not long on the scene.  On November 26, 1863, Margaret married William Callihan, who farmed in Fountain Green Township.  Follow the link to William to view their marriage documents.  William had been widowed twice before his marriage to Margaret; they had no children together.

In 1880 William, Margaret, Lewis and William's grandson, William Reeves, were living in Sedgwick County, Kansas.  After a few years, William, Margaret and Lewis returned to Hancock County.

From The Republican, July 1, 1891, Chat's Webster column: "Mrs. Wm. Callihan, who is a sufferer from chronic rhumatism [sic], and unable to walk, was presented a handsome invalid's roller chair by her good husband."

William Callihan died February 20, 1907, and was buried at Fountain Green Cemetery.

In 1910 Margaret was living with her niece in Williamstown, Missouri.  At some point she returned to Hancock County, where she passed away.  She died January 18, 1918, and was buried at Webster Cemetery.
