William's obituary is from The Carthage Republican, December 15, 1937.  It told only part of the story: census records indicate there were five Dale children.  After William and Mary parted company, she remained in Kansas with their childen and later moved with them to California.  She died after April 15, 1910.  Of the Dale children born in Illinois, they were most likely born in Hancock County, perhaps Carthage Township:

i. Frank B. "Bert" Dale, born about 1873 in Illinois, died after April 15, 1910, before December 9, 1937, probably in California.  See the 1880, 1900 and 1910 census transcriptions, below.

ii. Lillie Grace Dale, born January 5, 1875, in Indiana, died August 28, 1958, in Orange County, California.  Lillie married Richard Wesley Jackson about 1901.  He was born in Kansas August 25, 1878.  In 1900 he was working as a farm laborer in Chetopa Township, Wilson County, Kansas.  Lillie and Richard had no children.

In 1918 Richard registered for the draft.  At that time his and Lillie's mailing address was Rural Delivery 3, Santa Ana, Orange County, California.  He was described as being of medium height and build, with brown eyes and brown hair.

iii. William A. Dale, born about 1877 in Indiana or Illinois.  He died after April 15, 1910.

iv. Charles Orien Dale was born in Illinois, moved with his family to Kansas, married there and later moved to California.  He married Lulu Long about 1902; she was born June 12, 1884, in Kansas, the daughter of George R. and Melissa Long, both originally from Illinois.

In 1918 when he signed up for the draft, Charles gave his birth date as May 3, 1881; mailing address No. 3, Box 188, Anaheim, Orange County, California.  He was an oil well pumper for Standard Oil in Brea, Orange County.  Nearest relative - Lulu Pearl Dale.  The registrar described him as being of medium height and weight, with blue eyes and light brown hair.

Charles spent a number of years working in the oil industry in various locations in Orange County.

Charles and Lulu had three children who survived infancy:
- Orien O., born in Kansas February 16, 1905; died October 11, 1977, probably in the
Los Angeles area
- Leon, born about 1906 in California
- Clare, born in California, October 9, 1909, died in June of 1982, probably in the Los
Angeles area

Lulu and Charles also probably died in the Los Angeles area, she on October 22, 1970, and Charles on December 8, 1972.  Social security records show his birthdate was May 3, 1880.

v. Nettie M. Dale, born about 1884 in Indiana, according to the one census record in which she appeared.  If accurate, it suggests that the William Dale family lived in Indiana twice.  In her father's obituary Nettie was named as Nettie Long.  We believe she died before April 15, 1910.

Included in Frank Dale's household in 1910 was his mother, Mary, who reported that she was the mother of 5 children, 4 living.  The third family member was George R. Long, nephew, 5, born in California.  In 1920 Robert Long, nephew, 14, born in California, was living with Nettie's sister and brother-in-law, Lilly and Richard W. Jackson.

Lulu Long's father, as stated above, was also George R. Long.  In 1910 he and his family were in Canville Township, Neosho County, Kansas.  Son "Orlie" A. (Orland Arthur) Long was listed as 26, born in Kansas, a widower.  It's our strong hunch that Nettie had been the wife of Orland Long.  Orland remarried and was living in Orange County, California, in 1918, 1920 and 1930.  When he registered for the draft in 1918, his mailing address was Rural Delivery 5, Santa Ana, Orange County, California.

We have not located Nettie and Orland's son after 1920.
