MORRIS HASTEN 1878-1932 |
January 20, 1932 Morris Hasten passed away at his home in Webster the evening of Jan. 17, 1932, aged 53 years, 11 months and 4 days. The summons which called this young man from life's activities came very suddenly, bringing shock and sadness to his relatives and friends who, while noting with concern a gradual decline in health and strength, were entirely unprepared for the unexpected seizure which so abruptly closed his earthly journey. Morris Hasten was the son of Jack and Lydia (Dunham) Hasten. He was born in Fountain Green township, Feb. 13, 1878. His father and mother, one sister and two brothers have long since passed to their reward. Of the immediate family, three survive, Will Hasetn [sic], of Rock Island; Joe of Washington; Seth of Iowa; Hugh of Carthage; two brothers, Frank and Carl, and two sisters, Mrs. Linda Miller and Mrs. Mary Hobart reside in the near vicinity. Morris Hasten's entire life was spent near the home of his birth. Here he grew to young manhood, taking his part and place in life's duties and industries. His days were spent in honest toil. He was an obliging friend and neighbor. A devoted son and brother. During the dear mother's invalidism he proved himself to be an efficient and tender caretaker, and did much to smooth the way for her passing and the breaking up of the old home, he became a welcome member in the family of his sister, Mrs. Mary Hobart. When suffering and sorrow entered this home he again proved himself to be a valuable assistant in the sick room, bringing care, cheer and comfort to the dearly beloved sick boy during his declining days. Morris later purchased the old homestead which he has since owned and occupied. The excellent physical strength which marked his early years have these later months shown signs of waning and his condition has been viewed with some anxiety by his people. But without warning a severe hemorrahage of the lungs came, the seizure so violent, that he passed away before medical skill could reach and relieve him. After a few moments of suffering his earthly life closed and his spirit returned to God who gave it. The funeral services were held at his old home church on Tuesday, at two o'clock, conducted by Rev. Reichel of Carthage, who spoke words of comfort from the blessed words found in John 14-1, "Let not your heart be troubled." A choir composed of Madams J. A. Beebe, J. A. Robinson and Messrs. J. A. Duffy and Arthur Spangler with Mrs. C. R. Callihan, organist, sang the old comforting hymns "Thru the Valley and the Shadow", "Shall We Meet" and "Sweet Bye and Bye". The pall bearers were: Allen Shipman, John Hoyt, Ernie Emmings, Roy Fuller, Burk Harmon and Frank Booz. |
