Pardon Hobart passed away at his home here Sept. 8, aged almost 90 years.  He was born at Webster, the son of Jonas and Polly Hobart, who came to Illinois from Vermont in 1836.  Jonas Hobart was a millwright by trade and had a great hobby for flowers.  He was a guard at the Old Jail at the time the Smiths were murdered.

In 1873 he was married to Florence McCumber and nine children came to them, Frank, Mrs. Ida Mosley, L. S. Hobart, Orin, Mrs. Frances Wright, Herman and Howard.  The eldest child was killed in a boiler explosion in California, aged 23, and Ann Ruth Rings died in 1923 at the age of 30.

Thirty years ago Mr. Hobart bought property in Carthage.  He was very religious, having helped organize the Methodist church at Webster and serving as Sunday school superintendent.  Funeral services were held in the Webster church, Rev. Fred Nichols officiating.  Mrs. Ethel Callahan, Mrs. George Miller, Arthur Spangler and Clem Duffy sang two numbers, accompanied by Mrs. George Latherow.  Mrs. Pearl Calhoun sang, "The Old Rugged Cross."  Pallbearers were John McConnell, Charles Spangler, Samuel Lenix, Jabez Beebe and Al Shipman.  Interment was in Webster cemetery.

Warren Van Dine reported that the date of birth inscribed for Florence was June 21, 1853.  Her obituary stated that she was born June 4, 1853.  She was born in Gallia County, Ohio, the daughter of William Henry Harrison McCumber and Mary Ann Ewing.

Pardon and Florence's children were:
