ROBERT WESLEY NELSON
1879-1948

Author - Marcia Farina

Robert Wesley Nelson, son of Emily Lincoln and Benjamin F. Nelson, was born April 6, 1879, in Illinois, perhaps in Hancock Township, Hancock County.  He died May 20, 1948, in Fountain Green Township, Hancock County, and was buried at Webster Cemetery.

Sarah Ellen "Sadie" Gipe, daughter of Cyrus Gipe and Mary Margaret Hyde, was born June 28, 1883, in Fulton County, Illinois.

Robert and Sadie were married around 1901.  They lived for a number years in Hancock County.
In 1912 they were living near Joetta in Hancock Township and in 1918 they were living in or near Webster in Fountain Green Township.  It was in that year that Robert registered for the draft; he was described as being of medium height and build, with blue eyes and red hair.  In 1926, when daughter Fay was married, Robert and Sadie were said to be living in Dallas City, Hancock County.

We have not determined Robert's whereabouts in 1930.  Sadie may have been in Wichita, Kansas; her elder sister, Anna, had lived in Wichita for a number of years.

Sadie later married John L. Hedde.  She died April 3, 1962, at Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, Macomb, McDonough County, Illinois.

We can reasonably presume the Nelson children were all born in or near Hancock County.  They were:

i. Iva Nelson born about 1902.  She married, first, William Riley Long.  She married, second, Lester Bull.

ii. Garnet Nelson born about 1905.

iii. Fay Nelson born about 1908.  She died after April 3, 1962.
