Jesse Taylor had travelled a long life's road before he was laid to rest beside his wife in the little rural cemetery in Webster, Illinois. He had been born in Massachusetts; lived for an indeterminate period in Ohio; in the mid 1840s settled in a sparsely populated Illinois township known only by its coordinates, unnamed until 1850; spent two years in the 12th Illinois Cavalry during the Civil War; fathered 10 children and outlived six of them; buried his wife of 50 plus years.
Mary Ann Lovette, originally from Auburn, New York, married Jesse in Grafton, Ohio, on March 2, 1837. The year 1840 found them in Lorain County, Ohio. He was 28, she was 21, and they had two young sons. By 1845, when their fifth child was born, they had arrived in Hancock County, Illinois, where five more children would be born before 1860. Except for a period in their last years when they apparently lived across the river in Keokuk, Iowa, Fountain Green Township in Hancock County would be their final home. On January 15, 1862, Jesse signed on with the Cavalry. Son Albert had enlisted in 1861 and son James, too, would serve. That left, perhaps, the eldest son, Charles, to keep things running on the farm. We have no information on Charles after 1860. On Jesse's registration card, his age was understated by four years. Jesse came home and resumed his work as a mason. He and Mary Ann lost two grown daughters in the '70s.
By the late 1880s Jesse's health was failing. The Republican, Chat's Webster column: January 1, 1890: Mrs. Jesse Taylor is quite ill with something like inflamatory rheumatism. February 26, 1890: J. W. Taylor, of Keokuk, was here a few days on business. Mary Ann died on April 30, 1891. Reportedly an invalid for about two years prior to her death, she may have died in Keokuk, Iowa. Chat's column, July 13, 1892: Mr. Jesse Taylor is in Keokuk, Ia., the guest of his daughter, Mrs. M. V. Riley. Jesse died July 22, 1893. He and Mary Ann and four children lie near each other in Webster Cemetery.
