WEBSTER.

Death of Mrs. Joseph Lenix

.....Kathrine Yetter was born in Dayton, Ohio, Oct. 28, 1837, died Oct. 14, 1915, aged 77 years, 11 months and 14 days.  She was the seventh child of a family of eleven children born to Louis and Elizabeth Yetter.  In 1851, at the age of 14 years she came with her parents to Illinois and settled on a farm near Carthage, Hancock County.  Four years later, on March 29, 1855, she was united in marriage to Joseph Lenix.  To them three children were born, all of whom preceded her to the better land.  Mary, the first born, died June 16, 1872, at the age of 15 years; Walter L., the second child, died Dec. 5, 1877, at the age of 14 years; and Bessie C., their last born, and for that reason perhaps the most beloved, gave up her sweet young life Dec. 15, 1891, aged 12 years, 7 months and 5 days.

After her marriage, she with her husband located on a farm one-half mile south of the old Lenix homestead, where she died; here the two first children were born.  Later they settled on a farm two miles east of Carthage, where their last child was born, and where they lived for many years until the hand of Death took from them their entire family of little ones, after which the dark cloud of sorrow so heavily around the old home that it became unbearable and the farm was sold and the lonely parents moved to Carthage in the spring of 1892.  Here they resided until about three years ago, when the health of both began to fail and they were persuaded to come back to the old Lenix homestead, where they have since resided.

Twenty-three years ago Aunt Kate, as she was lovingly called by all who knew her, gave her heart to god and united with the First Presbyterian Church of Carthage.  She has ever since been a faithful, though silent, worker in the Master's cause.

Her father's family were Mary, Barbara, Simon, Lewis, William, John, Katie, Christopher, Henry, Sarah and Susie, and two half-brothers, Martin and Emanuel.  Of these who yet remain are Henry Yetter of Chicago; Christopher, located in Kansas, and Mrs. Susan Strickner [sic], living in Iowa.

"Aunt Kate" has been a patient sufferer for some time with heart trouble which baffled the skill of her attending physician.  She was a sweet and gentle little woman, giving her whole time and strength to those she loved within her home and the grief over the loss of her own little ones only served to open the mother love within her breast for all children within the entire family circle.

.....For more than sixty years she and her aged companion...traveled the long road from youth to old age together...There is now left in the home the lonely husband and an aged brother-in-law, Samuel Lenix, who shares his brother's grief...

Funeral services were held at the home Sunday at 10 o'clock a.m.,...The pallbearers were James and Earl Lenix, Eugene Yetter, Frank Dye, Frank Wright, and Morris Yetter....Relatives who were here were Mr. and Mrs. Chris. Yetter of Odella [sic], Kas., and Mrs. Guildner of Chicago.  A large concourse of sympathizing friends followed the remains to the family burying ground in the Yetter cemetery....

Note that the tombstone bears October 15, 1915, as Catherine's date of death.

It's our opinion that Catherine Yetter was born in Miami County, Ohio, not in Dayton, Montgomery County, as stated above.  See Lewis and Elizabeth Yetter, for further discussion of the subject.

Hancock County marriage license #2433 was issued at Carthage on March 27, 1855, to Joseph Lenox and Miss Catharine Yetter.  They were married on March 29 by the Reverend Thomas M. Walker, who would continue marrying Hancock County couples, particularly those residing in proximity to Fountain Green, until his death in 1888.  Marriage License
