This is a really fast stitch to work up. I first showed it to my mother, and she had an entire afghan made with it in only a few weeks.

For the sample swatch shown here I am using worsted weight yarn and a H hook. I crochet rather tightly, so you may want to adjust accordingly.

Chain 21, turn.
1. Half-double (hd) in 3rd chain from hook. Ch 1. Skip 1 chain. Half double in next chain. Continue across chain. Ch 2, turn.

2. You will now put a hd over the ch 1 space and place it in the ch skipped on your starting chain. Then ch 1. Continue this way across work and end with a hd in top of turning ch 2. Ch 2, turn.

3. Now you will put your 1st hd under the back single bar on the top of the hd in row 1 below the ch 1. You might need to nudge the hd in row 2 back just a bit to see where you are placing this stitch. (depends on what type of yarn/thread you are using) Ch 1. Hd in top back bar of hd of row 1 below the ch of row 2. Continue across row, ending with hd in top of ch 2.

(Putting the stitch in only the back top bar makes the afghan look the same on both sides, thus giving it the mesh appearance.)

4--end. Repeat row 3.

That’s it. Just 2 stitches to create a quick and beautiful piece. I have used it with cotton yarn, baby thread (single and double strands) and worsted. The only negative I find with it is that it is a bit difficult to see where you are placing the stitches if you use some of the more “busy” multi-colored yarns, or put multiple colored yarns together.
