William Manchee was invited to and accepted the pastoral office (at Hertford), commencing his duties two months later. A strenuous and successful effort was made in 1870 to extinguish the debt on the church. Interest had evidently been maintained in the work of the Sunday School, for in 1874 its numerical strength was 23 teachers and 176 scholars. The Church Roll records the addition of 34 names. One reference is from the Hertfordshire County Association, dated 21 Oct 1872. "Mr. Manchee was a member at the time of leaving England and he had done a good and faithful work in the town of Hertford throughout the entire period of his ministry. The pastorate is to commence, if he accepts, after the first sabbath in April, 1873. Salary for the rest of the year to be at the rate of $800.00 per annum. Mr. Manchee agreed to be pastor on condition that a vacation to the extent of 4 sabbaths in the year be allowed him. This was agreed on.
p.172, 3 Sep 1879, "The pastor intimated his intension shortly to resign his pastorate and stated fully the personal & other grounds on which he had more than a year since concluded on the expediency of such a movement." He has accepted a pastorate of the Congregational Church of Plainsfield, New Jersey, U.S.A.
