William John
Colenso was born in 1847 Penzance. He was
the surviving son of Francis Colenso and
Elizabeth Webb.
As a man with some education he was first
a spirit clerk in Penzance, then a
commercial clerk to a flour merchant in
Phillack, a commission agent in Redruth,
and a traveller in the grocery trade at
Wolborough with Newton Abbot.
In 1874 William John married Emily
Champion, the youngest child of James and
Honor Champion.
I have no idea why they married in Exeter,
but it is an area to which they returned
with their children towards 1901.
Their son Frank Champion Colenso was born
in 1876 Redruth and Letty followed in
1879.
Frank followed in the family line of work
and became a clerk in the grocery
trade,
marrying Maud Mary Gray in 1919 Falmouth
and continuing to live in the Exeter
area,
while Letty remained unmarried and at some
point returned to Ludgvan, Cornwall to
live.
