                                                               Henry A., Amanda

                             Victoria, and Minnie.

John was born September 5, 1839 in Mount Airy, Wythe County, Virginia and died September 6, 1925 in Wichita Falls, Wichita, Texas at his daughter, Vic's home.  Silas and Florence FITZPATRICK took care of John until Florence was unable to care for him.  He, then went to Aunt Vic's home where he died of cancer.

After his return home from the Civil War, he married Elizabeth MAYNARD November 26, 1866.  She was born November 18, 1844 in Pike County to Henderson MAYNARD and Lucinda McCOY.  Elizabeth died April 26, 1871 in Wise County, Texas.  Both she and her baby daughter's graves are lost to us.

On December 24, 1871, John married Amanda Jane ARMSTRONG in Wise  County, Texas.  Amanda was born 26 August 1853 in Daviess County, Missouri to John R. ARMSTRONG and Susan Elizabeth SHERRILL.
Amanda died January 29, 1923 at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.  John and Amanda are buried in the Rush Springs Cemetery.  Amanda's headstone lists her as Mandy, wife of J. A. Etter.

Although 2 ETTER, 2 SEYMOUR, and 2 FITZPATRICK were connected by marriage, I am only related to the Etter-Fitzpatrick and Seymour-Fitzpatrick lines.

The Civil War began and John enlisted in the Confederate Army on May 27, 1861 at the Logan County, Virginia Courthouse.  He served in the Confederate 36th Virginia Volunteers Infantry.  On February 14, 1862, he was wounded at Fort Donelson, Tennessee.
The battle lasted two days and he was wounded on the second day.  He was left at Clarksville, Tennessee.  During his service in the 36th, he made Sergeant.  On the Company Muster Roll dated November 1, 1862, it states "now Adjt. in Va State line.  He was in the Virginia State Line when he made First Lieutenant.
On April 28, 1865, Sergeant. John  H. ETTER from Co. K 36th Infantry, took the oath of allegiance.  His physical description is 5'11" tall, fair complexion, gray eyes, and fair hair.  His occupation is a blacksmith of Pike County, Kentucky.
After our father's death, my older brother, Kenneth, obtained a military stone for John.  Military archives had no record of John's First Lieutenant commission in the 36th.  In 1996, I learned he was in the Virginia State Line where he received the commission.  Between 1867 and 1869, John moved his family and his mother to Wise County, Texas.  We believe he might have left Pike County due to the Hatfield and McCoy feud.
