Charles Bernard of Laois (Queen’s Co) was the eldest son of Thomas and Deborah Bernard. He was born about 1688 and died in 1728. There is a record of a Charles Bernard, marrying Rachel Stringer, of Chester. There is no year cited but the record book is for the years 1711-1715.  It is not confirmed that this is the same Charles Bernard but it is probable as in 1736 a Rachel Bernard is a defendant in a suit where Thomas Bernard (a minor) and his guardian Thomas Piggott are the plaintiffs. Other deferndants are: Franks Bernard, Mathew Humpfreys, Philip Bernard, Joseph Bunbury and, Mary John and Elizabeth Bernard (Court of Chancery Records, 1633-1851).  Also, Mary (Bernard) Russell, their daughter named her daughter Rachel. The only other Charles I encountered in my research was Charles Bernard of Rathrush, Co. Carlow who was born in 1670.

In 1718 Charles Bernard was the high Sheriff of Co. Carlow.  He later established his home in Bernard’s Grove (now Blandsfort), Laois (Queen's Co.). Will dated 1728 (7) . Thomas Piggott was an executor.  Had at least six children who were mentioned in that Deed, (probably in birth order)
  • Thomas Bernard, b. about 1712, who married 1736 Elizabeth Pigott (only child of Thomas and Mary Pigott). Thomas Bernard died intestate in 1744. Elizabeth (Pigott) Bernard then married Peter Westenra, Curate of Rosenallis.  Children of Thomas and Elizabeth Bernard:
    • Thomas Bernard (Jr.) 1738 (who became a ward of Thomas Piggott)
    • Mary Bernard born about 1737 ( married her cousin William Bernard, son of Joseph and Mary)
  • John. Died before 1756 intestate, without issue
  • William. Died before 1756 intestate, without issue
  • Elizabeth Bernard. b. about 1713 m. William Carleton of Blaris in Co. Down, Gent, about 1730, she died before 1756. He died about 1789. Sons:

    • Henry Carleton 1734
  • Mary Bernard b. about 1715, m. Henry Russell 1739 in Carlow. Henry was a wine cooper in Dublin (died in 1785). Henry and Mary had at least six children:
    • Hugh Russell (the eldest son, born about 1740-died 1790)
    • Catherine Russell, born about 1741, married John Cope in 1760. (He died in 1766. She died before 1767). She left a will (1).
    • Henry (Jun) Russell
    • Rachel married Arundel Maddden in 1767
    • Elizabeth Russell 1749 (the only child with a baptismal record that I could find - https://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/). Married Jacob Poole, a brewer, in Dublin in 1768
    • Charlotte Russell married James Franks in 1774 (2) . William Henry Russell witnessed the deed (could be the 2nd son Henry or a cousin)
References to these siblings can be found in several memorials at the Registry of Deeds, all from the 1770s (3), (4) and (5)
  • Catherine Bernard. Died before 1756 intestate
Mary (Bernard) Russell is mentioned as "one of the younger children" in the Probate abstract for Charles Bernard.  Charles died about 1728

“A Probate of the last Will and testament of Charles Bernard, Drinifilick, Queen's Co., gent. 17th March 1728 by which will the said Charles Bernard devised 400 share and share alike among his younger children pursuant to the settlement made by Thomas Bernard, the testator's father.
