Agnes Echlin (1706-1739) was my 6th great grandmother and the eldest child of Rev. Henry Echlin and Lady Jane Moore.
The Echlins were originally Scottish although the first Echlin in Ireland, The Rt. Rev. Robert Echlin, was born in Staffordshire, England in 1576. After relocating to Northern Ireland he became Bishop of Down and Connor from 1612 to 1635. He married Jane Seaton about 1600 and had six children (birth years are estimates):
John Echlin (my 10th great grandfather), born in or before 1608, married Mary Stafford 3rd daughter of Sir Francis Stafford of Mount Stafford, Co. Antrim about 1627 and had five children:
Robert Echlin (my 9th great grandfather) of Ardquin, is estimated to have been born about 1628. He married Anne Coningham, daughter of Alexander Coningham about 1649. Robert and Anne had four children:
Robert Echlin died at age 57 in 1656 very soon after the death of both his first wife and his second marriage. After his death Mary (Leslie) Echlin, his widow, married Sir Robert Ward.
Sir Henry Echlin 1652-1725 (my 8th great grandfather) he was the first Echlin Baronet. His father died when his children were still very young, and he seems to have left his family in some financial difficulty. Henry worked in the courts as a clerk while still in his teens, to supplement his income while he attended Trinity College Dublin, matriculating (entering) in 1667, he was a Scholar in 1668, entered Lincoln's Inn in 1672 and the King's Inns in 1677 when he was called to the Irish Bar. He was appointed a Sergeant-at-Law in 1683 and became Master of Arts in 1703. He was knighted in 1721 and was created a Baronet. He married Agnes Mussen, daughter of Rev William Mussen of Belfast, about 1677. They had four children:
Rev Henry Echlin (my 7th great grandfather) 1681-1752 D.D., Vicar of St Catherine's, Dublin (1716) where he was Vicar until his death. Henry married in 1705 Jane Moore (1691-1770), daughter of Hon Brabazon Moore and Susannah Pepper.
Henry and Jane Echlin had eight children (birth years are estimated where not known):

Brabazon Moore (1666-1721), my 8th great grandfather was the son of Randal Moore and Jane Brabazon
Brabazon Moore married Susanna Pepper (she was born about 1670). She was the daughter of Captain George Pepper of Ballygarth, Co. Meath, (he was born c. 1645)
Brabazon Moore and Susannah Pepper would have married about 1690. They had three sons and three daughters as described in 2 deeds of 1702 (Masserene Papers)
Henry, the eldest son

Edward, Randle (2nd and 3rd sons), Susannah and Mary (2nd and third daughters)

Brabazon Moore of Ardee, Louth and Mount Terrible, Co Monaghan died in 1721.
Susannah (Pepper) Moore made her will dated 15 March 1735/36. It was proved on 16 January 1737. "Moore, Susanna, Dublin widow; dated 15th March 1735/6, p'd 16th Jan'y 1737; Daus Mary Cunningham and Hannah Smith; Son Randall; Granddaughter Agnes Gayer...". (Ref: Betham's transcripts). Her granddaughter Agnes Gayer being the daughter of Lady Jane Moore and Rev Henry Echlin

- Hugh Echlin 1606-1641
- John Echlin abt 1608
- Euphemia Echlin abt 1612
- Jane Echlin abt 1615-1646
| There are few
documented dates of births (baptisms) or marriages for the early
generations of the Echlin family. Often a death date is the only
reliable date and this is usually given without an age at death.
Various publications give birth and marriage years, usually within a five year
span of each other, and even some of these are suspicious when one
considers the reported dates of the birth of the first child. |

John Echlin (my 10th great grandfather), born in or before 1608, married Mary Stafford 3rd daughter of Sir Francis Stafford of Mount Stafford, Co. Antrim about 1627 and had five children:
- Robert Echlin c. 1628
- Elizabeth Echlin
- Jane Echlin
- Mary Echlin
- Francis Echlin c. 1634. Took the last name Stafford in order to inherit the Stafford estate.
**********************************************
Robert Echlin (my 9th great grandfather) of Ardquin, is estimated to have been born about 1628. He married Anne Coningham, daughter of Alexander Coningham about 1649. Robert and Anne had four children:
- John Echlin, Abt 1650
- Henry Echlin, 1652
- Robert Echlin, 1657-1723.He became a Lieutenant-General, commander of the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons, and later a prominent Jacobite, who died in exile in France
- Jane Echlin. 1655
Robert Echlin died at age 57 in 1656 very soon after the death of both his first wife and his second marriage. After his death Mary (Leslie) Echlin, his widow, married Sir Robert Ward.
| Many sources name Robert Echlin's first wife as
Mary Leslie, having married in 1655 with Mary being the mother of his four children.
However, Robert's 2nd son, Rev Henry Echlin was born in
1652 (this date being fairly reliable), so Mary could not have been his mother. Burke in A Genealogical and Heraldic History of the landed Gentry, vol 2 stated that Robert married "Anne (widow of ---- Hamilton, Esq), daughter of the Rev Alexander Coningham" and secondly Mary Leslie. Burke is not always a reliable source but in this instance I believe it to be correct. Also, in the notes on Robert Echlins 3rd son Robert 1657-1723, in "The History of Parliament: the House of Commons 1690-1715, ed. D. Hayton, E. Cruickshanks" Robert Echlin's mother is stated to be Anne Coningham. "b. c.1657, 3rd s. of Robert Echlin of Ardquin, co. Down by his 1st w. Anne, da. of Alexander Conyngham of Mount Charles, co. Donegal, dean of Raphoe 1631–d. educ. Trinity, Dublin, adm. 9 July 1675, aged 18. m. 7 May 1696, Anne (d. 1724), da. of Sir Francis Blundell, 3rd Bt., of Blundell Manor, King’s Co., sis. of Sir Montagu Blundell, 4th Bt.†, s.p.1" Mary Leslie was definitely the widow of Robert Echlin at the time of his death as she was named at probate. She was therefore, his 2nd wife. |

| Some sources say Henry married firstly Lady Jane Moore (1691),
sister of the Earl of Drogheda (The Peerage). In another reference "The Reverend H. Echlin was son of Sir Henry Echlin, Baron of the
Exchequer, and married—1st Lady Jane Moore, sister of the Earl of
Drogheda; and 2nd, Mary, daughter of Brabazon Moore, son of Randal
Moore, of Ardee, by Lady Jane, daughter of the Earl of Meath." from
Memoirs
of the Family of Gayer," by A. E. Gayer, Esq. I cannot find a record
of a Mary Moore, daughter of Brabazon Moore but he did have a sister Mary Moore. The predominant references are to Jane Moore being his first (and only) wife, daughter of the Hon. Brabazon Moore, son of Randal Moore and Susannah Pepper. |
Henry and Jane Echlin had eight children (birth years are estimated where not known):
- Agnes Echlin c.1705 she married Rev. Philip Gayer, of Lisburn, co. Armagh.
- Henry Echlin, c. 1707. He married Bridget Hickey about 1765. They emigrated to America and died there. Henry's will, dated 27 Jan. 1787, was proved 7 May, 1789.
- Chambré Echlin, c.1711 (listed as 2nd son of Henry and Jane), he married 27 Feb. 1759, Esther Newman, and died in 1776, leaving two sons: Henry Frederick and Chambre and a daughter Jane who married her cousin James Echlin.
- Chaworth Echlin, c.1708 died unmarried.
- Edward Echlin (1709-1736)
- Susanna Echlin (1710-1723)
- Robert Echlin c. 1711
- Jane Echlin 26th June 1713.
In the Irish Church Records there is a
record of the burial of a Brabston (Brabazon?) Echlin in 1717, but no
baptismal record. This may have been the 9th child who died at birth
but I cannot confirm that.
The birth order of the sons of Henry and Jane are detailed in a deed describing the entail* of Sir Henry Echlin's estates (Ref: ROD 46/181/28216). Image # 115
*"Entail is a form of trust established by deed or settlement
which restricts the sale or inheritance of an estate in real property and
prevents the property from being sold, devised by will, or otherwise alienated
by the tenant-in-possession, and instead causes it to pass automatically by
operation of law to an heir determined by the settlement deed". (Wikipedia)
