INTRODUCTION TO MY OYLER ANCESTORS

THE OYLERS OF KENT 1500-1700S

SAMUEL OYLER OF HAWKHURST & FAMILY

THOMAS PETTIT OYLER & ELIZABETH POTTER

POTTER SAMUEL OYLER & MARY ANN HALES

THOMAS POTTER OYLER

Samuel Oyler 1765, son of Elizabeth (Osborne Oyler) was my great x4 grandfather.

Samuel Oyler was christened on 27th May 1765 in Hawkhurst, Kent. Samuel married Mary Hayward 13th May 1787 at the age of 22. I did not find any record of children from this marriage and it appears that Mary (Hayward) Oyler died as Samuel, now a widower, married Elizabeth Colville on 2nd April 1791 in Cranbrook. He was 26 years old.

Elizabeth Colville was also previously married, but a widow at the time of her marriage to Samuel Oyler. She was born Elizabeth Standen on 14th Mar 1762 in Goudhurst, Kent the daughter of William and Sarah Standen.  She married James Colville (or Colvil) 30th November 1781 in Goudhurst, Kent. They had 3 children.

  • Elizabeth Colville born Feb 10th 1786;
  • James Colville born Feb 15th 1788
  • Mary Colville born 26th Jun 1782. Mary continued living with the Oyler family and was mentioned in Samuel Oyler’s will. Mary Colville married John Chantler 3rd Nov 1802.

Hawkhurst itself is virtually two villages - one, the older of the two, consisting mainly of cottages clustered around a large triangular green known as the Moor, and the other, farther north on the main road, called Highgate. Each part has a different character. Highgate stands on a crossroads and is where the shops and hotels lie. The village was the centre of the Wealden iron industry until the Industrial Revolution of the late 18th Century.

High taxation on luxury goods in the early 1700s led to an upsurge in smuggling, and Hawkhurst gave its name to one of the most notorious gangs of ruffians and smugglers. They terrorised the countryside: several of the local houses, including Hawkhurst Place, the Tudor Arms hotel, the Oak and Ivy pub and Tickners, claim associations with the gang. They were the kings of the trade, bringing brandy, silk and tobacco up from Rye to be stowed away in hidden cellars and passages before being sold off to the local gentry.

At some point after their marriage there is evidence that Samuel and Elizabeth Oyler lived in Winchelsea, Sussex. In Winchelsea Corporation Records, Court of Record, Praecipes and Concords there are two references to Samuel Oyler. The first records an acquisition of property in 1792 and the second a divestment of property in 1795:

1) “Before Richard Lamb, mayor, Thomas Marten and George Stace, jurats - ref. WIN/399 - date: 16 Oct 1792 Samuel Oyler v William Seere and his wife Elizabeth, William Edwards and his wife Elizabeth, James Brown and his wife Philadelphia, and James Chester and his wife MaryThis document was a transfer of property consisting of "six messuages, six gardens and one area of land with the appurtenances in the Parish of St Thomas the Apostle....." from William Seere and his wife Elizabeth, William Edwards and his wife Elizabeth, James Brown and his wife Philadelphia, and James Chester and his wife Mary to Samuel Oyler.

2) “Before George Stace, mayor, Thomas Marten and Richard Lamb, jurats - ref. WIN/402 - date: 3 Feb 1795 John Stephens v Samuel Oyler and his wife Elizabeth”.  This document, was a transfer of property from Samuel Oyler and his wife Elizabeth to John Stephens of "one messuage and one garden with the appurtenances in the Parish of St Thomas the Apostle....".

Samuel and Elizabeth (Standen/Colville) Oyler had at least 8 children The first two children were born in Winchelsea, Sussex; there is no record of George’s birth so it is not known where he was born, the other five children were born in Hawkhurst, Kent:

  • Thomas Pettit Oyler 1791-1842, born in Winchelsea,

  • Samuel Oyler christened 8th Dec 1793 in Winchelsea died about 1867. He married Sophia Rabson 28 Jul 1814 in Ticehurst.

  • George Oyler 16 Aug 1795 (as recorded on his tombstone). There is no record of his birth in Kent Parish Registers nor in Winchelsea, Sussex. He married Sarah Goeble from Benenden.

  • Hannah Oyler born:  Hawkhurst.  Christened 7 Apr 1797. Married Joseph Chapman of Hawkhurst, a farmer and widower, 14th Jun 1818 (Canterbury Marriage   Licences, 1810-1837). Witnesses were Samuel Oyler, Mary Martin and Stephen Tomlin. Joseph had three children from his first marriage to Mary Wenban (or Wenbar) in 1810:

    • John Chapman born 1810,
    • Sarah Chapman born 1812
    • William Chapman born 1815.
Mary (Wenban) Chapman died in 1816 and Joseph married Hannah Oyler in 1818.  He and Hannah had six children.
    • George Chapman, born 1820
    • Mary Chapman born 1821
    • Hannah Chapman born 1822
    • Samuel Jewhurst Rabson Chapman 1823-1906
    • Caroline Louisa Chapman born1825
    • Fanny Chapman born 1827

Joseph Chapman died in 1832 when Hannah was 35 years old. Hannah then married her father's brother, George Oyler a widower. In the 1841 census they are living in Barden Farm with his two sons Samuel and Thomas Oyler. In the 1861 census they are living in Cranbrook. George Oyler died in 1861 in Hawkhurst and Hannah (Oyler) Chapman died in 1874.

  • David Oyler born:  Hawkhurst  27th Oct 1798. Married Maria Cane in Wittersham,  15th Nov 1819. Maria and David had several children, the first four were born in Salehurst, East Sussex, just across the county boundary from Kent, 5 miles from Hawkhurst:

    • 1820    -           Daniel Oyler (no further record, probably died in infancy)
    • 1821    -           Edward Oyler
    • 1824    -           David Daniel Oyler
    • 1825    -           Henry Oyler
    • 1826    -           Mary and John Oyler were born but it is not known where, or if Maria was the mother,

Although there is no record of Maria’s death David Oyler married Mary Selves probably some time between 1826 and 1829. Two more children were born in England, probably to Mary (Selves) Oyler, before the family emigrated to America:

    • 1829    -           William Oyler
    • 1831    -           George Oyler

In 1832 David Oyler and Mary (Selves) Oyler emigrated to Ohio with seven children: Edward 10, David Daniel 8, Henry 7, Mary and John 6, William 3 and George 1. George Selves, Mary’s brother, was also on board the same ship.  The family settled in Hamilton Co, Ohio where David Oyler was a farmer. Six more children were born in the USA:
    • 1834    -           Sarah Oyler
    • 1836    -           Maria Oyler
    • 1837    -           Elizabeth Oyler
    • 1839    -           Thomas T. Oyler
    • 1841    -           David Oyler
    • 1843    -           Jane Oyler

David Oyler died in Harrison, Hamilton, Ohio, United States in 1858, aged 60.

  • Susan Oyler born:  25th July 1800 Hawkhurst.   Christened 25 Jul 1800. Married William Ongley, 22 Jun 1818 in Winchelsea. William was born in 1793. Children:
    • William Ongley,
    • John Ongley
    •  Mary  Elizabeth Ongley
After Susan’s death "William John Ongley sailed on the ship the Woodbury  from Blackwall  England in the later part of Jan. 1833. It took them 10 weeks to arrive in NYC. He brought with him his two sons, William Henry and John Thomas. The little girl, Mary Elizabeth remained in England with her grandparents until they died. She then came and was reunited with her father and his new wife".

  • Betsy Oyler born:  3rd Nov 1802 Hawkhurst,  Died:  Jul 1840. Married William Smith about 1822. They had a daughter,
    • Betsy Smith born about 1823.

  • William Oyler born, Apr 1804 Hawkhurst, was Christened  27 May 1804. Married Mary Evendon (b. 1809 in Frittenden, Kent), on 23rd  Oct. 1826 in Frittenden, Kent. Children:
    • Elizabeth Oyler, 2nd March 1829. In the 1850 US Census Elizabeth is married to George McIntyre, living in Lauramie, Tippecanoe, Indiana and had a daughter Harriet.  Elizabeth died in 1863.

    • Mary Oyler born1827. There is no record of Mary Oyler after the shipping record of her emigration

Both children were born in England. William, Mary and their two children immigrated to the US on Jun 7, 1830 on the Barque Robert and Ann when Elizabeth was 3 months old. They settled in Lauramie, Tippecanoe, Indiana where William’s brother Samuel also settled.

What happened to William and Mary is unclear.  Some history’s show William and Mary died when the two girls were young and they were raised by a Mr. and Mrs. Moon.  Others show William marrying 6 times and dying at the age of 99. i.e. 1840 William married (2) Elizabeth Hollensby. About 1846 he married (3) Mary. He married (4) Mary Davill About. 1853 in Tippecanoe County, Indiana. He married (5) Mary Bully December 5, 1856. He married (6) Rosana Helen December 3, 1866. died April 12, 1903 in Clarks Hill, Tippecanoe, Indiana aged 99.

There is no substantive evidence for either theory
  • John Oyler born Dec 1805 Hawkhurst, was christened 1 Jan 1806. He married 1st Jan1827 in Staplehurst Parish Church to Elizabeth Small (The daughter of Thomas and Sarah Small), witnessed by Hannah Chapman, sister; Samuel Oyler father and Thomas Small, (Source: Staplehurst All Saints Church Parish Register 1813-1837). He travelled to Ohio in 1828 with his older brother George.  He must have returned as he died before 1840 in Kent. Two children (no records)

Samuel Oyler died 7 Dec 1840 aged 75. Cause of death “infirmity”. William Smith, his son-in-law was in attendance.  Burial:  6 Jan 1841 Churchyard, St. Lawrence Parish, Hawkhurst. The inscription on his gravestone reads “Samuel Oyler.  To the memory of Samuel Oyler aged 73 years. Died December 1840. Also the remains of his second wife Elizabeth of the named Samuel Oyler who departed April 21st 1844 aged 83 years”.

The will of Samuel Oyler was written 3/July/1840 and a codicil added 18/Nov/ 1840

 Executors:

George Oyler of Ticehurst (brother), William Smith of Staplehurst (Son-in-law), Hannah Chapman (daughter) Widow of  Joseph Chapman.

 Bequests:

Samuel (son), David (son), William (son),  Mary (granddaughter – daughter of Susan Ongley), Mary Colville (step-daughter by wife Elizabeth. Married to John Chantler 1802) , Thomas Pettit (son – wife Elizabeth Potter, recently died 1841?), John Oyler (son – deceased. 2 children), Elizabeth (Wife), Betsy Smith (granddaughter by his daughter Betsy William [deceased]), Frances Matilda (grand daughter by Thomas Pettit. Born 1827, St Mary, Newington, Surrey), Elizabeth  (grand daughter by Thomas Pettit)

Not mentioned:  Son George (b. 1795. Emigrated to US in 1828),  Grandson Potter (b 1822)

Elizabeth Oyler (widow of Samuel) lived with her daughter Mary (Colville) Chantler in Newington after Samuel's death. She died at the age of 82 on the 29th April 1844. Cause of death "hydrothoarx"  or pleurisy.

Of the male children of Samuel and Elizabeth Oyler only Thomas Pettit Oyler, my ancestor, remained in England.  All the other sons of Samuel Oyler and Elizabeth Colville left England for the USA

1828    -           George Oyler and family emigrated to the USA in 1828

1828    -           Travelling with George, Sarah and family, when they emigrated to the

USA in 1828 was John Oyler aged 23 and Elizabeth Oyler aged 25.  Samuel and Elizabeth Oyler had a son John (born 1805) who married Elizabeth Small. Was this George Oyler’s younger brother and sister-in-law? If it was John must have returned to England as he died there just before his father.

John was mentioned in his father’s will (1840) as being deceased. There is no mention of George in the will.  Was he perhaps the “black sheep” of the family who had left against his father’s wishes.

George also had a brother William who married Mary Evenden October  23, 1826 in Frittenden, Kent. Immigration records show William Oyler (age 26) and Mary (23) and their two children: Elizabeth (age 1) and Mary (age 2), leaving England on the Barque “Robert and Ann” on April 9th 1832. I could find no further reference to this couple in the US. Perhaps they were visiting family and returned to England.

1832    -           David and his wife Mary and family emigrated to Ohio, the same area as his brothers.

1839    -           Samuel Oyler, with his wife Sophia Rabson and his family, emigrated to the USA in 1839
