200 West 10th Street

200 West 10th St.

Ellen Marshall lived here from 1884 to 1890 with her six children after John died.  This house is just around the corner from 341 Bleeker where the family had settled after moving almost every year.  It is likely that my great grandfather Frank J. lived here from the age of  20 to the age of  25.  Before that they lived at 272 West 4th Street.  If you think of the grid, it would seem that West 4th would be 6 blocks away from West 10th, but the two addresses are about a block apart.  This is the one part of Manhattan that does not conform to the rules of the grid.  I did not take a picture of the house at 272 West 4th Street because it appeared to be a more 'turn of the century' type building, but my great grandfather would have spent his teen years there right after his father died.  Frank J. grew up in the West Village.
