(These remedies were among family papers belonging to Genie Kalb, a
descendant of the Johann Peter Ross family. They were translated
from German by Inge Noyes.)

After 1/2 hour, soak sponge and dab in back of throat. As the

the throat and chest every 4 hours with a mixture of oil of
turpentine, baum oil, and aqua ammonia. Rub in and cover with a
flannel cloth.

Remedy against diptheria
Take the white of an egg and mix with a teaspoon of salt. Put it on
a strip of blotting paper and tie it into a thick cloth, then put it
around the throat. Go to bed. Within 2 hours it should have eased.
In a case where the diptheria has reached a higher degree, take 2
eggs and 2 teaspoons of salt and use 2 or 3 times. In advanced
cases, gargling with sage tea has had good success. You also should
keep the room for the sick person damp with water vapors.

Take a bath in water in which you have put ash and elderberry
blossoms which have boiled 3 hours. After 3 or 4 daily baths before
going to bed, gout should go away.
hoof ail in sheep
Muriatic acid and butter of antimony, of each 2 oz, white vitriol 1
oz. Lift the foot and drop a little on the bottom. Apply only twice
a week, as often as they limp which shows that the foot is tender
again. It kills the old hoof and a new one soon takes its place.
against hemorrhoids or piles
The hard nodules have to be softened. To do this boil a quarter
pound hops in a bit of water. Pour all into a bucket and bring to 2
gallons with hot water. Set the bucket under a chair with an open
seat. Sit over it and wrap the bare body with a blanket so that the
steam envelops the ailing area as long as possible. The hop water
can be reheated with a heated brick immersed in it. Once the
nodules are softened, clean internally with an enema, for which one
simply uses warm water. As ointment use any fat. Goose grease as
well as lard are recommended. Avoid salty dishes. Too much ???? is
damaging.

Strawberry leaves are a good medium against urinary tract/dysentery.
Even weak women can use it. Either field or woods strawberries.
First in small quantities 3-4 times a day, then somewhat stronger.
After 2 to 3 months will the results be evident. The strawberry
leaves make a good tea.
remedy against insomnia
Dampen half of a towel with water and place on the neck and the
lower back of the head. To prevent quick evaporation, fold the dry
part of the towel over it. The effect is prompt and pleasant, since
it refreshes the brain and induces a healthier sleep than with a
remedy containing narcotics. You can also use warm water but most
prefer cold. For those who suffer from great excitement and stress,
due to stressful work or due to worries and distress, this simple
remedy has proven to be a true relief. For sleeplessness due to
abdominal cramps the so called "Neptune's Girdle"*, which consists
of a cloth dipped into cold water and wrung out well, wrapped around
the abdomen with a dry cloth on top.. has been proven effective many
times. With this remedy many stomach and female problems have been
healed.
*Still used as a standard and simple home remedy in Germany
