The Family of
William Hennebohle
(1858-1897)
of Chicago, IL
|
William Hennebohle
was born Conrad Wilhelm Henneböl on November 6, 1858 in Rüthen,
Westfalen to Caspar Henneböl and Theresia Tillmann. He was baptized
November 10, 1858 in St. Nikolaus Catholic Church in Rüthen.
| FHL microfilm #1052876 of the church records of St.
John Baptist Catholic Church in Rüthen which also records the events
occurring in St. Nikolaus Catholic Church, Rüthen. |
On May 15, 1882, William Hennebohle was
recorded as arriving at the Port of New York aboard the N.A.S.M. Steamship
Amsterdam along with his father Caspar and his youngest sister Elisabeth.
It is possible that this voyage was not William's first to the states,
but rather his return to the states bringing along his father and sister
after the death of his mother. (This
is just conjecture however.)
On June 4, 1884, William Hennebohle was married
to Catherine Schiltges in Ss. Peter and Paul
Catholic Church in Chicago. Present as witnesses were Frank Hennebohle
and his wife Anna. While it may be logical to assume that Catherine
Schiltges was a sister or otherwise related to Anna Hennebohle nee Schildges,
this researcher has not found any conclusive proof of such a relationship.
It appears likely that Catherine Schiltges/Schildges is the same person
as the Catherine Schildges who arrived May 24, 1884, just eleven days earlier,
at the Port of Baltimore aboard the Steamship
Strassburg with five month old infant William Schildges.
William and Catherine had
the following children:
-
William C. Hennebohle
was born circa 1879-1883. William married Hattie <unk> who was
born in Silesia October 6, 1882. William worked for the Universal
Atlas Cement company as a master mechanic. William died November
25, 1942. His age in the obituary in the Hammond Times is given as
63. His wife Hattie died March 31, 1974. They had two children,
William (Little Willie) and Hattie.
-
Francis (Frank) John Hennebohle
was born February 19, 1885. He was baptized March 1, 1885 at Ss.
Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Chicago. Frank married his brother's
widow, Hattie, after William's death.
-
Joseph Hennebohle was
born May 5, 1886 and baptized May 11, 1886 at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic
Church in Chicago. The baptism record carries no notation on the
health of Joseph, but the burial record records his burial, also May 11,
1886. The baptism sponsor was Elisabeth Hennebohle, apparently the
sister of William Hennebohle.
-
Peter Emil Hennebohle
was born December 9, 1887. He was baptized December 26, 1887 at Ss.
Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Chicago. Emil worked for a foundries
in Northern Indiana however due to his asthmatic condition, the work did
not agree with him and he became a railroad riding vagrant. His whereabouts
have been unknown since the 1930's.
-
Catherine Martha Hennebohle
was born July 10, 1891. She was baptized July 18, 1891 at Ss. Peter
and Paul Catholic Church in Chicago. Martha married Richard Werner.
-
John Hennebohle was born
September 13, 1892. He was baptized September 15, 1892 at Ss. Peter
and Paul Catholic Church in Chicago. What may be an error in the
church record, while the father is listed as William Hennebohle, the mother
is given as a Mary Schrohe. John married Julia <unk>. They
had one son, Vernon. Julia divorced John while he was hospitalized
from the effects of mustard gas poisoning suffered during WWI. John
died circa 1950.
-
Elisabeth Lizzie Hennebohle
was born August 25, 1894. She was baptized September 30, 1894 at
Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Chicago. The baptism sponsors
were Theodore and Elisabeth Mistelski. Elisabeth Mistelski is the
sister of William Hennebohle. Lizzie Hennebohle died September 15, 1895
and was buried September 16, 1895 at St. Mary Cemetery in Chicago.
-
unnamed Hennebohle, a
daughter, was miscarried April 7, 1896 and was buried at St. Mary Cemetery
in Chicago.
1895 marks the beginning
of a tragic time for the William Hennebohle family. After the death
of their infant daughter Lizzie in September of 1895, Catherine had a miscarriage
in April of 1896 and on May 4, 1896 succumbed to peritonitis following
the miscarriage at the age of 33 years 11 months.. She was buried
May 6, 1896 at St. Mary Cemetery in Chicago. Nine months later, on
February 20, 1897, William Hennebohle died of Chronic Nephritis at the
age of 40. He was buried February 23, 1897 at St. Mary Cemetery in
Chicago. Following the loss of their parents, the William Hennebohle
children were integrated into the Frank
Hennebohle family.
