Passenger manifest for SS. Strassburg

Pasgr# Name Age years months Sex Intended Destination
179 Catherine Göth n/a n/a n/a n/a
180    " Schildges 21 F Ohio
181 Wilhelm    " 5 M Baltimore

A very confusing manifest, adding further confusion to an already confusing situation.  It's clear that passengers 180 and 181 are a Catherine Schildges age 21 years and a Wilhelm Schildges age 5 months.  What is not clear is the intended destinations of each of them.  Was Catherine Schildges going to leave what was apparently her son in Baltimore while she traveled on to Ohio?  Could the Baltimore entry for Wilhelm be a mistake by the ship's purser?  What was in Ohio anyway, that Catherine Schildges was heading for?  Could a William Hennebohle have been awaiting her arrival in Ohio?  Is this the future wife of William Hennebohle?  The May 4, 1896 report of death for Catherine, the wife of William, gives her age as 33 years 11 months, placing her birth about June of 1862.  This is entirely consistent with the age of the shipboard Catherine.

What is known is that just eleven days later, on June 4, 1884 at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in South Chicago, William Hennebohle, the brother of Frank Hennebohle, married his bride, a lady named Catherine Schiltges [SIC per church marriage record].  Witnesses for the marriage were Frank Hennebohle and his wife Anna (Schildges).

On February 19, 1885, a son - Francis John, was born to William Hennebohle and Catherine Schiltges.  The child was baptized March 1, 1885 at Ss. Peter and Paul Church.

At least two grandchildren of William's brother, Frank, (Mathilda (Sieben) Maxfield & Frederick Sieben) recall that the eldest of the William Hennebohle children was named William, followed by Frank, Emil, Martha and Johnny.  Through church records of Ss. Peter & Paul, all but William can be accounted for.

One other William (Jr.) mystery is that his Nov. 27, 1942 obituary in the Hammond Times gives his age as 63.  That would place his birth in the year 1879, not 1883/84.  The obituary fails to mention anything of William's birthplace or give a date, nor does it mention his parents (who died in 1896 and 1897) nor his (legal or not) adoptive parents, his aunt and uncle, Frank and Anna (Schildges)  Hennebohle.
