bullet  Events

• Joseph was described as "Mariner" on John Smallwood's travel documents.

• The birth, marriage or death date of Joseph is not yet known. But, hey, we've narrowed down the last of these, his death date, to three options:

1. Possibly before 9th November 1847.

2. Possibly before 31st March 1851.

3. Possibly before 2nd December 1856

1. An Elizabeth Smallwood, "widow of Joseph Smallwood", died on 9th November 1847.

2. The 1851 Census - taken on 31st March 1851 - for Paddington, London showed the Bull family living at 24 Sale Street, Paddington - and living with them was a John Smallwood aged 18, apprentice carpenter, born Kensington.

The Bull family is being researched by Fay McCamley, of Bajool. Her Bull family also settled in the Rockhampton area, as did John Smallwood and his new wife, Ellen Pittard.

3. On the passenger list of the vessel Beejapore, John Smallwood states "both parents dead". The Beejapore departed England 2 December 1856.

• This is believed to be a Crest for the Smallwood Family.

The Smallwood coat of arms hereby illustrated is officially documented in Burke's General Armory. The original description of the Arms (shield) is as follows:

Chequy ar. and sa. on a canton of the second a sword bendways of the first."

When translated the blazon also describes the original colours of the Smallwood arms as:

"Chequered, silver and black; on a black canton, a silver sword on the left diagonal."
