• This obituary, from the newspapers of the day, paints a fine picture of Murdo MacLean.

The late Mr. Murdo MacLean, Ullapool

An esteemed correspondent writes:

Our good friend was a typical Highlander and a typical Christian. His well built frame - the very picture of sound health and robust strength - retained its vigour, practically undiminished, till he was well over the alloted span. He was really one of the notable landmarks of Ullapool: representing in a very real sense the quiet, unobtrusive piety of the past generation, and the generous and, perhaps, more active, piety of the present. In manner he was quiet, thoughtful, considerate. His religion was genuinely practical - it influenced his everyday life and work.

He was a master builder, and never was a tradesman more respected and trusted. Whatever work he undertook was always executed in the most thorough and conscientious manner.

His upright life was a living testimony to the high principles that actuated his mind and spirit. His congregation and session will sorely miss Mr. MacLean's helpful presence and sage counsel: for he was most regular in his attendance at the means of grace, both on week-days and on the Sabbath. Devout and reverent, he was always at the post of duty, and thus an example worthy of imitation.

He passed away after a few months broken health, on the evening of Sabbath, - 30th November. His end was peaceful and beautiful. The sympathy of the whole community goes out warmly to Mrs. Maclean and her large family of sons and daughters, many of whom are now settled in distant parts of the world.

A lifelong friend, with much sorrow, lays this chaplet on his grave.
