bullet  Events

• The man Beatrice married already had two children - Myee, a little girl, and Ralph, a boy.

Mr Chester owned a plantation in Papua New Guinea, and grew coffee, or tobacco.

• The author has been told that Beatrice was also married, at one time, to a Mr Hastings? There is no evidence to support this.

He is quoted as being "a mongrel". He obviously was not a nice person.

He was a printer in Townsville.

• SOCIAL.

Very quiet was the wedding of Miss Beatrice Smallwood, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. S. Smallwood, of Townsville, and late of the staff of the B.N.G. Trading Co. Ltd., when she was married to Rev. H. Matthews of St. John's Anglican Church on the morning of the 8\super th\nosupersub instant to Mr. … Chester, of Lolorna plantation. M… E. T. Ward, of Rorona Plantation, escorted the bride and Mr. E. V. Crisp … manager of the Steamships Trading Co. Ltd., was the only guest. The bride and groom are spending a brief time in the home of the Hon. and Mrs. A … Jewell, at Ela Beach, before returning to their plantation home.

The children of Port Moresby held a "breaking-up" picnic on the cricket oval and great was the enjoyment thereof. Races and competitions of all sorts, with soft drinks and the usual etceteras, made a very pleasant afternoon for mothers and children alike, all voting it an excellent afternoon, more especially as there was a very pleasant breeze.

• Beat is seen here, with her family, in the professional portrait taken in 1913 by the travelling photographer.

• Beatrice enrolled at Irvinebank State School in 1914.

The records show her attendance as being from August 1914, and from January 1916.

• Beatrice, with her mother and sisters.

Frances on the left, then (clockwise) Beatrice and Evelyn, with their mother Mary Ellen in the centre.

• This lovely photograph was taken in November 1987.

It shows Beatrice with her sister, Frances, and Mitch. Mitch's husband Arthur is behind her, and peeking through is Frances' daughter, Judith.

Arthur is the first-born son of Charles Smallwood, Beatrice's and Frances' brother.
