Breakdown of Hoy's experiences while in the U.S. Navy:
April 26, 1939 - He was transferred to the U.S.S. ARIZONA for further
transfer to the U.S.S. LOUISVILLE.
May 12, 1939 - He was transferred to the U.S.S. LOUISVILLE - While on
the U.S.S. LOUISVILLE he was assigned to the Executive Officer's office
as enlisted Personnel yeoman, handling personnel accounting, discharges,
enlistments, filing, daily, monthly and annual reports. He was promoted
to Y3c on November 16, 1940 and to Y2c on October 9, 1941. While on the
LOUISVILLE, the ship made the largest gold transfer in history from the
US East Coast to the US West Coast.
October 22, 1941 - He transferred to Navy Yard, Pearl Harbor, T.H. for
reassignment to the U.S.S. ARIZONA; Temporarily assigned to Navy Relief
Office as bookkeeper.
December 13, 1941 - He was transferred to Naval Air Station, Pearl
Harbor and was assigned to Receiving and Transferring section and was
responsible for all personnel reports to the Bureau of Naval Personnel.
Promoted to Y1c on June 1, 1942.
June 1, 1943 - He promoted to CY(AA) and placed in charge of
approximately 20 yeomen; responsible to the Executive Officer for all
enlisted personnel records, reports and accounting. Hoy was also legal
yeoman, acting as recorder for Summary and General courts-martial.
October 24, 1943 - He transferred to the U.S.S. PENNSYLVANIA and was in
charge of the Executive Officer's office, also assigned to the
Communication Department and stood watches in the Coding Department,
handling classified messages.
March 28, 1944 - He was appointed Ensign (T), USN and transferred to
Receiving Station, San Francisco, California, and was assigned to Naval
Training Station, Newport, R.I. for training of crew and for duty on
U.S.S. ATLANTA. Was Aide to the Executive Officer and in charge of the
Executive Officer's office, assisted in writing Ship's Organization
Book, and stood watches as Coding Officer in the Communications
Department. Ensign Mayfield was a plank owner of the U.S.S. ATLANTA.
July 9, 1945 - He was appointed Lieutenant (jg), USN, and duties
remained the same.
November 20, 1945 - He transferred to U.S. Naval Training Station, Great
Lakes, Illinois, for temporary duty and discharge.
January 14, 1946 - He was honorably discharged.
Battle watches while on the U.S.S. LOUISVILLE, the U.S.S. PENNSYLVANIA,
and the U.S.S. ATLANTA consisted of manning battle telephone circuits,
headphones. Was Captain's talker on the U.S.S. PENNSYLVANIA and U.S.S.
ATLANTA.
At the U.S. Naval Air Station, Pearl Harbor, T.H. he was assigned to the
telephone watch at the Officer of the Day office
