COLBY LANE and CELIA JANE MCCOLLUM

Descendants of Coleby Lane and Celia Jane McCollum Generation No. 1 1. COLEBY1 LANE was born 1813 in Kentucky, and died November 25, 1863 in Chariton County, Missouri. He married CELIA JANE MCCOLLUM 1835, daughter of WILLIAM MCCOLLUM and ANGELINE BAKER. She was born 1823 in Missouri, and died 1855. Notes for COLEBY LANE: Received information from a June Smith, [email protected], that Coleby Lane might have been a brother to Matilda Lane, who married John William Scrivner that went to Oregon and died 1933. Got this information from [email protected]. "Somewhere a long time ago I got some info from the Scrivner line. Don't think they verified anything. Some of these people came to Oregon. Something that came from a will of Reason B. Willaby (Willoughby) showed a dau Martha S. married William A. Lane. That could have been the son of Coleby." (this information can't be right as Coleby's son William had a middle initial of H. and married a Sarah, last name unknown) In 1850 census it states that Coleby Lane was living in Chariton County, Missouri. Said he was born in Kentucky. On this census it states that Coleby was 37 years old making him born around 1813. Received information from [email protected] that Coleby and Celia had eight children-a child named Missouri is not listed in my data but is supposed to have been born of this marriage-- could it be a nickname for Mordecai? Received this letter from Doris re; info on Coleby I went down to the genealogy library in Austin Saturday and found this: source: Chariton County Wills and Administrators 1861 - 1875 Vol.: I Page 146 William H. Lane Administrator for Coleby Lane died intestate Nov 25, 1863 _________________________________________________________ Information sent by Doris [email protected]; This is a notice that William Lane ran in the newspaper after Colby died. The dates are so hard to read. I guess all we can know for sure is that Colby died in the fall of 1863. We know that the name of the newspaper was then as it is now, The Brunswicker. Maybe they ran an obituary. I could write to them and see if they will search their archives for that. Colby was only 50 years old at this time. Could he have gotten caught up in the Civil War? Chariton County was torn apart at this time. Suzy, if the proper records are available at the National Archives, could you look at the Missouri Homeguard rosters? This might be at the Missouri State Archives instead. I think he would have had southern sympathies. You will see later than a public administrator has to take over because William evidently didn't settle Colby's debts. Again, the following was so hard to read, even with a magnifying glass, that I am not sure of it. Especially the dates. Keep that in mind. AFFIDAVIT I, John F. MARY ELIZABETH2 LANE (COLEBY1) was born April 22, 1843 in Chariton County, Missouri and died August 01, 1918 in Newman, Jefferson County, Kansas, Newman Cemetery. She married (1) WILLIAM BANNING 1861 in Jefferson County, KS. He was born August 10, 1836 in Illinois, and died August 26, 1868 in Newman, Jefferson County, Kansas, Newman Cemetery. She married (2) CHARLES MCCOY May 17, 1870 in Jefferson County, Kansas. He was born May 06, 1840 in Near Loretta, Cambria County, Pennsylvania, and died January 10, 1926 in Perry, Jefferson County, Kansas, Newman Cemetery. Notes for MARY ELIZABETH LANE: The following was sent and told by Pat Daughtery [email protected] MARRIAGE: She was married to William Banning first and he died very young and left her with a son, William, and daughter, Molly. This is from family history passed on to me. The 1870 Kansas. census shows her living with Charles McCoy -age 27yrs.-having married him in May of that year. She has the two children listed as William, age 5 yr. and Mary, age 3 yr. BURIAL-Originally in Olive Branch Cemetery (Jefferson County,Kansas) and now in Newman Cemetery-Hiway 24-Jefferson County, Ks. Had to be moved when they built Lake Perry. She died in the family home. Info. from newspaper obituary in possession of granddaughter, Ruth Lanning of Topeka, Kansas.-March, 1996. Found reference to a sister by name of Elene (Eilen?) Purdy of Topeka and one brother, Mordicai Lane of Missouri. 1996-late winter-I visited this Cemetery and it is titled by large sign arched over front entrance with Rosehill. It is my understanding that it is now two cemeteries back to back in this little place that used to be the town or township of Newman, Kansas. in the 1800s and early 1900s when Kansas. was being settled - another little place along the railway in those days. More About MARY ELIZABETH LANE: Census: Listed in the 1850 Chariton County Missouri. census as being 8 years of age. Notes for WILLIAM BANNING: The following information told and sent by Pat Daughtery [email protected] From family stories he died very young. His wife (Mary Elizabeth) remarried a Charles McCoy with whom she had four more children. William and Mary had a son, William, and a daughter, Molly, who is my great grandmother and married George H . Ross. The 1860 Kansas census shows William living with a family by the name of Smith as a farm laborer, 23 years old and not yet married. Was also told he worked at or owned & operated horse race track of some sort. BURIAL: Rosehill Cemetery at Newman, Jefferson County, Kansas. W.M. Banning d. 26 Aug. 1868 -age 32 yr. 16 da. listed in "Tombstones And Burial Records in Jefferson County, Kansas." Birth: 1850 Missouri census, Chariton County, Clark Township lists him with a mother- Elizabeth, and 4 siblings, and as 16 yr., born in Illinois & a farmer. "Civil War Era Jefferson County Militia" lists Banning, William Private in Company E enlisted from Rising Sun-active duty 10 Oct. 1864; relieved of duty 25 Oct. 1864. Have since gone to Jefferson County to research and taken pics of the stones in the cemetry of he and Mary and her second family (the McCoys). Also searched to probate for clues as to his parents & siblings, etc. Found no William, but did find a Joseph W. Banning. Low and behold, it is he. It is the same information I have about his death and lists she and the children; and of course, all of the belongings, etc. He is writing it a day or so before his death. I have a copy in my files. More About WILLIAM BANNING: Children: Information re: children of William and Mary given to me by [email protected]. Notes for CHARLES MCCOY: He is second husband of Mary E. Lane Banning. They are both buried in Newman Cemetery in Jefferson County, Kansas. Info. from family members and the 1870, Kansas. census. Lyle Ross told that when he was about 10 yr . old, they used to come to Kansas to see Grandpa McCoy, as he called him, in the Veterans/Old Soldiers" Home (in Lawrence area?). Another source says Rosehill Cemetery is in the same area-almost identical location. Guess they are back to back. MARRIAGE:Jefferson County, , Kansas. marriage records-book A-Pg. 168, #334 BURIAL:Newman cemetery, Jefferson County,Kansas-photo of stone, etc. in the possession of Pat Daugherty. Pat dugherty tells; McCoy history in my possession (from grandaughter, Ruth Lanning, Topeka and a newspaper article) states he was one of 11 children (10 boys & 1 girl) , of Mr & Mrs. Hugh McCoy. His grandfather, John McCoy, of Scotch -Irish descent was an early settler of Cambria County, Pa. The McCoy family moved to Lycoming county, Pa. when he was about 7 yr. old. His father was a teacher by profession and he enjoyed the facilities of excellent common schools. He and brothers served in the Civil War. Details in my family history book. Also found a death of Rosalie L. McCoy of 4 June 1923 listed in family bible on deaths page as his 2nd wife. Guess this was never accepted by the children. Found reference of brothers by the names of Andrew, John, Robert, Henry (who drowned trying to cross the James River during the war). Listed in 1875 , Kansas. Agricultural Census Index as 34-farmer, b. Pennsylvania from Pa. res. Kentucky. Township pg. 4. Spouse and 3 children listed with him. Also 1880 Census list -res Kentucky Township as age 40 and with 3 children and Mother, Margaret, age 66. Children of MARY LANE and WILLIAM BANNING are: 16. i. WILLIAM F.3 BANNING II, b. NANCY2 LANE (COLEBY1) was born 1847 in Missouri, and died Unknown. She married SIMON PHILLIPS. He was born in Virginia, and died Unknown. Notes for NANCY LANE: Sent to me by Sue Apgar [email protected] on 06-02-2000 The name of Simon and Nancy's child. It is Minnie Phillips. I believe she had another child but it died as an infant. In the probate file for Nancy Lane Phillips Green dated March 24, 1880 her child Minnie lived with her aunt Mary Wilson. George Wilson was appointed her guardian. I located Minnie in the 1880 Chariton County Census living with Mary Wilson and her two children, Sophia and John. Minnie is nine born in Missouri, father born in Virginia, mother born in Missouri. According to this census she is the niece of Mary Wilson. According to my grandma, Minnie married a man and moved to Illinois, she returned as a widow in the early 1920's and then married a man from Carroll County, Missouri living there until her death. She had no children and my grandma did not know the name of the man from Carroll County. Child of NANCY LANE and SIMON PHILLIPS is: i. MINNIE3 PHILLIPS, b. Missouri; d. Unknown. 6. MORDECAI JACKSON2 LAIN (COLEBY1 LANE) was born July 14, 1848 in Chariton County, Missouri and died August 12, 1929 in Marceline, Linn County, Missouri, Buried Mt. Olivet Cemetery. He married CORA ELLIS COWSER 1879, daughter of JOSEPH COWSER and CATHERINE WOOD. She was born April 08, 1856 in Illinois, and died February 08, 1929 in Marceline, Linn County, Missouri, Buried Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Notes for MORDECAI JACKSON LAIN: Not listed on the 1850 census of Chariton County as Mordecai but there is a child listed as Missouri who was one year old so this could have been a nickname for Mordecai or just a mis-spelling of his name. Grace Ann Lain (Cupp) said the spelling of his name was "Mortica Jackson Lain", went by the nickname of M. J. From "History of Howard and Chariton Counties" Book supplied via fax from Herschell Lain to Myrna Johnson Nov 17, 1999 (copies were from the book text) Page 617 The second murder committed in this this county (Chariton) occurred in 1833, at Keytesville. Goodman G. Oldham was an attorney, and while prosecuting his profession he was killed. Mordecai Lane was supposed to be the murderer, but upon his trial he was acquitted. (For further particulars of this murder see history of Muscle Fork Township, Chariton County) Chapter XI Page 497 AND 498 MUSCLE FORK, WAYLAND, YELLOW CREEK, CLARK AND SALT CREEK TOWNSHIPS. OLD SETTLERS Among the old settlers of Muscle Fork township was Goodman Oldman, who was a native of Madison County, Kentucky. In 1832 he moved to Howard County, Missouri, and in 1833 toChariton County, where he lived until his death, which occurred April 5, 1835. He was killed in the town of Keytesville by Mordecai Lane. Oldham was quietly sitting by the fire at the hotel where he was stopping, when Lane opened the door and shot him in the back, killing him instantly. Oldham had purchased some land from Lane and was to receive a warrantee deed. The payments on the land had all been made except the last. When Oldham demanded his deed, Lane could give him only a tax-deed, as that was all the title he had. Oldham brought suit against Lane for the recovery of his money, and because of the litigation instituted by Oldham, Lane, it was thought, killed him. He (Lane) was suspected of having committed the deed, was arrested and confined in jail to await his trial in the circuit court. Two or three years passed before he had his trial, and when it occurred he was acquitted. Upon his (Lane) death bed, however, Lane confessed that he was the man who killed Oldham. The above could not be our Mordecai Jackson Lain as M.J. Lain was not born until July 14, 1848. There was another older Mordecai Lane born or raised around the Howard/Chariton County area, said by Ideana Ann Lain/Hickle on 01-20-2000. ____________________________________ I, Ideana Ann Lain/Hickle on 01-30-2000 have a theory. Our Mordecai Jackson Lain was born with the last name spelling of "Lane" and after his leaving home or after adulthood, he changed the spelling of Lane to Lain. My theory is, because of the sad happenings of the older Mordecai Lane in the story above, this might have been one of the reasons that our Mordecai Jackson Lain changed the spelling of his last name, so to unidentify him with the scandelous stories of the older Mordecai. More About MORDECAI JACKSON LAIN: Name (Facts Page): Mordecai changed the spelling of his last name from Lane to Lain Occupation: Told by Frank Lain ... Notes for GRACE ANN CUPP: Got the following from the cassette tapes and spoken by Grace Ann Lain (Cupp); Grace Ann Cupp only went to school till 1904, her little sister was born ( Bertha Beatrice) and she had to stay home and help take care of her. _______________________________________________________________________________ A Few Memories of Grace Cupp Lain-told on Easter Sunday, March 30, 1975, at 87 years of age. My grandfather was Simpson Cupp and my grandmother was Sarah McDaniel. They were probably married in Iowa, but I don't know for sure. Grandfather and Grandma Cupp had 8 Children: first was born Jack, who died when he was about 21 years old; next was Cass, Mary, Ike, David Green (my father), Christopher Columbus (called Lum), Daisy (called Daze), and Bill. My father, David was born March 29, 1865 in Missouri. My mother was Tomesia Alice Dorrell. She never Liked her first name and was always known as Alice. She was born on December 8, 1870. Her father was James Dorrell, who was an only child. Sarah Compton was her mother. My mother had two brothers, Jim Tom and Joe Dorrell. They lived all their lives in the Brush Creek and Mussel Fork areas near Marceline. They were married April 21, 1887. They had 6 children. I was the oldest, then Lewis, Jim, Goldie, Bertha (called Bea), and Cora. Father died on February 14, 1942 and mother died on January 10, 1947. They are buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Marceline. I married Clarence Franklin Lain on February 11, 1906. We were married at Dad's place by Justice of the Peace, Cal (JC) Couch. Alec Dorrell, my uncle, and Susie Baer were there. They were later married themselves. Susie came to our 50th wedding anniversary. We had three children. Mable was born April 19, 1907 and died after giving birth to a stillborn son named Lester Lee Still, on February 22, 1924. Omer was born on April 26, 1909 and lives in Marceline. Clarence was born on February 2, 1911 and lives in Dallas. I met Clarence, born April 19, 1885, at the Currey School house south of Peden Chapel. The teacher, Della McClure, introduced us. We did not see each other again until my aunt, Ann Dorrell, and I were walking home one day and Clarence rode by us going to a ball game at High Hill School. At that time he played on the Wilson Yearling Ball Team. As he rode by us he waved. The next time we saw each other was at the Old Soldiers Reunion. Dad took the family in the spring wagon. We saw Clarence in a buggy with a woman named Edith Anderson. He was taking her to the reunion. Later Clarence was sitting on a bench and my girlfriends and I kept walking by him and waving. The next time I saw him was at the Peden Chapel. I had gone with Ann Dorrell, Clarence had come on horseback. Ollie Conrad had driven a buggy. Ollie wanted to walk Ann home so he asked Clarence to drive his buggy. Clarence asked me to ride home with him in the buggy. Of course I did. The date was December 6, 1903. The next day, Sunday, Clarence came to see me for the first time and we went to church. He wanted to know if I would go to the Christmas Tree in Westville with him. At the Christmas Tree you could put gifts on it. They would call out your name and you went up and got your gift. I was to meet him in town the next day and tell him if I could go or not. I did all the shopping as Mother was expecting Bea and could not go. I heard Mom and Dad discussing whether I could go or not and they decided I could. We went to the Christmas Tree and he bought me a dresser set and gave it to me that day. One Sunday Clarence didn't show up like he was supposed to, so I left and went to Sunday School then to a friends house. It was dark when I stopped at Grandpa Dorrell's. He told me Clarence was at my house and had been waiting all afternoon for me to come home. He was seldom late after that. On New Year's Eve, December 31, 1905, we started out for a dance at Jim Jeff's. There was no one there so we went on to a dance at Alec Lingo's. I loved to dance and always danced all the time. I was supposed to dance with two other men when Clarence decided it was time to go. I protested but he said we were to go. When we got outside he changed his mind and we went back in and stayed until it was over. It was on that night on the way home that we decided to get married. Clarence asked Mother's permission to marry me but he never did ask Father. Alec Dorrell took me to Marceline to buy material for my wedding dress which I made myself. After we were married, we stayed at Dad's as Mother was expecting Cora and could use my help. Clarence rented some land and farmed and I helped Mother. We stayed there one year paying no board. We moved in March, 1907, to the Tom Orman place east of Westville. Mable was born there on April 19, 1907. In March of 1909, we bought Grandpa Dorrell's place, 80 acres and Omer was born there on April 26, 1909. We traded with Dad our place for 40 acres by the Van Dusen Bridge. Ernest was born there February 2, 1911. We sold that place to Humphrey Oldham and rented Mr. Lain's place in Byumville. We stayed there the year of 1919. While we lived there we got our first car, a Ford. We lived in Hebern, Iowa, when Mable was married to Alvah Still, December 22, 1922. They were married by Reverend Week in our house. We eventually settled in Kansas City and retired in Marceline. Clarence died on December 8, 1960 in Marceline and is buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Marceline. In closing, I would like to say that those years were poor ones, but very good ones. We never had a separation in all those years. Whatever I wanted, Clarence saw that I got it. We had a very happy life together. Linn county was organized January 6, 1837, from Chariton County and named for Lewis F. Linn, United States Senator.
