I have found out a little bit more information about my great-grandfather, Charles Ira Riggs. My dad thinks he might have been born in Emporia, Kansas. I would suspect anywhere from 1880 prior. He was married in Oklahoma Territory in 1895 to Susan Ellen Will. He had at least two brothers. Their names were John Riggs and Lee Riggs. I know that he died in Cushing, Oklahoma in 1954, so my next step is going to be checking with the State to look at a possible death certificate to find a possible birthdate. That will be a start anyway. I thought I'd also try to find the marriage certificate to see if it had an age on it. That would narrow down the year anyway. If anyone has any further information I'd appreciate it. Thanks. Karla in Norman, Oklahoma

I have been checking all sources I can to explore and research my Rigg line. About five years ago, I came across a typed version of what seemed to be an "oral narrative" by my Grandfather Rigg's (George Burton Rigg b. 1872) Uncle Charles, that is Charles Rigg, b. 6/5/1826, Wabash County. In the story, he talks about a "Mr. Rigg in Enland married a Miss Townley, father tought his name was Hesekiel and her name Mary and they came to America and settled in East Va. near Washington, D.C. and raised a large family of boys, the mother geve one boy her sir (sur)name Townley as a given name and some of their boys moved to N. Carolina". Everytime I hear of Rigg or Riggs in North Carolina, I think it might be our bunch. There are Rigg family members in New Jersey and in the Chester, PA area which are not too far apart and moved subsequently to North Carolina. You can check the movement in the Pension Records file. So then I wonder if these are our Riggs or others? Did lots of people follow this pattern of movement at this time, or does it indicate a connection? Charles Rigg, the Revolutionary Soldier, born. 1756 who ended up in Wabash County is ours. His son Samuel, was born in Surry Co. NC 8/14/1791. Was Ezekiel the patriarch? Was he related to Reuben, Jesse, etc. The family names in our line tended to be Thomas, Charles, George, Townley etc. Perhaps they moved away from the Biblical sounding names. Our bunch of Riggs moved into (west) Va., Wood County about 1788 or 90 and then joined other families (Melroses, Beauchamps, Deputy etc) to navigate first the Ohio and then the Wabash in 1818. They landed in Wabash County and settled in the area of Albion, Edwards County and Mt. Carmel, Wabash County. Anyone who knows of connections with the above, please wrrite or post. Thanks, C. Rigg-N

Susan, Debbie. Sarah JUSTUS RIGGS is my ggggmother. When the JUSTUS family lived in Washington Co., PA their farm joined the RIGGS farm. Does this sound at all familiar? Feel free to write to me. ? Who were the parents of Sarah RIGGS who md (1) (--?-) REYNOLDS, and md (2) William GRIFFITH b 1742 prob Pr. George Co. MD (now Frederick Co.) ? Who were the parents of Elizabeth RIGGS who md Orlando GRIFFITH b abt 1730 prob Pr. George Co. MD I know William and Orlando GRIFFITH were brothers. Also, it's been said that Greenberry RIGGS was the father of Elizabeth. Were Sarah and Elizabeth RIGGS sisters? Was John RIGGS who came to Anne Arundel Co. MD in 1716 from Southampton, England the father of Greenberry RIGGS? Any help or clues whatever on these families will be appreciated. Dan Page
I am looking for Rebecca Riggs b. ca 1798 (my ggg grandmother. She married
Jacob Inabnett ca. 1830. They were probably married in Charleston, SC. They
had a son John Andrew Jackson Inabnett born Feb 24. 1834 in Charleston, SC.
They immigrated to Bossier Parish, Louisiana in about 1848. They may have
stayed in Artesia, Lowdnes Co., Mississippi for a while before arriving in
Bossier Parish, LA.

Rebecca Riggs is believed to have had three sisters: Susan Riggs, Jane Riggs
and Mary Ann Riggs. They married: Rev. David Lawrence, J. N. West and Platt.
All these lived in Bossier Parish, LA.

There are several Riggs in S.C. between 1790 and 1850. John Riggs and
William Riggs had land adjoining John Inabnit (Jacob's father) according to a
1822 survey.
It is possible that Rebecca could be one of these Riggs' daughters.

I have several land transactions naming Rebecca Riggs from Bossier Parish, LA
and one slave sale to her.

It is believed that she died in 1862 and is buried at the Fillmore Cemetery
in Haughton, LA.
Does anyone recognize this person/family? Thanks, Vicki Brehm

I have two different Riggs women in my family. Dorothy Riggs (1713 - 1803) was married to John Brees(e) in 1737 in New Jersey. Mary Riggs b. 1729/30 was married to Wyllis Pierson. I imagine they were married in NJ also, but I don't know that at this time. One person I have had communications with believes they might be sisters, another person thinks that Mary was a niece of Dorothy's. Several documents state that Dorothy was a Scotswoman, and at least two bits of data hint that Mary is probably descendant from Edward Riggs of Yorkshire, Eng. These different locations might make it very difficult for them to be sisters or aunt and neice. I would like to learn who their parents were if at all possible and I am hoping for a positive response from a Riggs List member. Judy Martin

There was a Lily (or Lilly) Riggs who lived in Wayne County, Illinois during the 1950s and 1960s. Many people there say she was a survivor of the Titanic. I do know that she left the bulk of her estate to a Catholic diocese down in Alabama. There is no Lily Riggs on the Titanic passenger lists. If she was on it, she must have married a man named Riggs after the disaster. Does anyone have any information about this lady? David Rigg

We have not been able to find our William H. Riggs, from AL, who was the father of George Taylor Riggs. Our George Taylor Riggs was born Feb 22, 1848 in TX. His siblings were: William Riley b. in 1842 in AL, Sarah Elizabeth, b. 1843 in AL, Josiah, b. in 1846 in TX. The family settled in Lamar Co., TX It is interesting, though, that the George D. Riggs of Charles Lee was born in 1858 and died in 1927....the same year that George Taylor died (July 4, 1927). George Taylor Riggs is buried in Lamar Co. TX, but I think he was living in Hugo, OK at the time of his death. The children of George Taylor Riggs were: Joseph Newton 1873 (my grandfather) Sarah C. 1875 Mary Elizabeth 1878 W.B. (Ben) 1879 Harriet (Hattie) 1885 Anna 1885 (?) Georgia 1889 Eventually, I will find my connection with the right William....the father of George Taylor Riggs. One of these days.....! Pat Flathouse

Hello Everyone! I am David Rigg. Though I am not a "RIGGS", it is my understanding that some of my ancestors changed their names to RIGGS because they had different religious or political leanings than most of the family. Also, it is common for people to put an "S" on my name...or call me Dave Riggs. I have no doubt that some people named RIGG were incorrectly listed in public documents as RIGGS. I have information indicating that a Charles Rigg came to America from England around 1750. He married Mary Townley while aboard the ship to America. They later had at least 2 children...Townley and Charles. Can anyone provide definite proof of this...or any other information about the RIGG family? David Rigg

This Jonathan b. 1803, must be a son of Reuben and Catherine (Sailing) Riggs. J. married Mary Polly Burton. He had an older son, Garnet, not living with him and I am guessing this is the Garnet who was living with James D. (above). I was also guessing that the above Reuben was also a son of Reuben and Catherine, and a brother of Jonathan, but now I am questioning it because of the recent census of a Reuben age 40 in MO, sent in by another. In the book HISTORY OF APPANOOSE COUNTY 1875 Iowa, Chicago - Western Historical Co. 1878 Reprint 1989. James D., Reuben, and Isaac were mentioned several times. Jonathan was mentioned in a history of Davis County. I wondered if the last three were brothers. Does anyone know who these people are? Reuben was a Prosecuting attorney of Appanoose Co. in 1847 and County judge in 1851. Isaac was not in any census, but was mentioned in the book for his services of arresting and guarding a prisoner. None of the above people were listed in the 1856 Iowa state census. Marilyn

From: The Baumanns Subject: RIGGS Genealogy I am trying ever so hard to find the parents of my great grandfather, Jesse RIGGS b. about 1831 in Ky. I found him in Wright Co.,Mo. in the 1860 census, married to Sarah Elizabeth Cody and my grandfather James Clisby Riggs, 3/12 year old. Later, I find him in Bond Co.,Il. Since ther was a Dixon Riggs family living in the same county [Wright Co., Mo. in 1860], I thought they might be related. Dixon was listed as 3 years younger and born in AL. There was also a 55 y/o Elizabeth Riggs living in this family-perhaps the mother and maybe a widow. Also in this same county [Wright Co., Mo, in 1860.] was a George W. RIGGS, age 20, born in AL., living in the James Cody household. This same James Cody is the father of Sarah Elizabeth Cody RIGGS. Since my grandfather was named James Clisby, I am interested in finding a Clisby RIGGS in AL. There is one listed in Lawrence Co. in 1850. Can anyone out there help me? Did Clisby RIGGS have 3 males in his household? Is there a record of Clisby dying in AL? I would be ever so grateful, if you could, help me. Annella

My Riggs family mostly moved to MO because they are all in the book, A Reminiscent History of the Ozark Region. I know most were there in the 1860's. Maybe your Mr. Riggs is Griffin, William S, John, James or Peter. I don't know any of the wives names. Griffin died in 1855 in Illinois. William was married 3 times. Robert was killed in the Civil War. Betty

I have another Riggs line: Elizabeth Riggs m. 1828 in Union Co. Indiana to William Simpson. She may be the daughter or niece of the Reuben Riggs, Sr. above. They were my great grandparents. I am interested in the surname Barnett. William and Elizabeth (Riggs) Simpson named one of the sons Barnett Harvey Simpson. I have always felt that Barnett and maybe even Harvey were both surnames in the lineage of either William Simpson or Elizabeth Riggs. Mary Bonsal. Mary, Checked the Indiana marriages that were online. I think this is the connection for RIGGS/BARNETT you mentioned. RIGGS, SOPHRONIA married BARNETT, AMBROSE in Johnson County, IN in 05-03-1840.Mary Bonsal

Neil E. Barber BARBER Descendants of Charles E.BARBER, born 9 Aug 1836 in Oneida County, New York, and who died in Watseka on 26 Apr 1918. His family moved from Windsor, Berkshire County, MA, to Oneida County, New York in the 1820s, and located there in Lee, Lee Center and Taberg. In New York, his family consisted of his father, Hiram Barber, mother Lorinda KELLOGG, and siblings Czarrina (Zarina?), Quincy, Lorenzo, Stephen Kellogg , Nancy, Marrna, Wesley, Charles E., Albert W. and Erwin. Hiram's parents are, Thomas BARBER and Silence WHITEMARSH. Lorinda Kellogg Barber is reported to have died in Oneida County about 1860. Charles E., may have lived for a time in Ripon, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin in the 1850s/1860s, and in Nepeuskin (Waukau), Winnebago County during the 1860s/1870s, with his father and 2 brothers where they were farmers. Charles E. Barber came to Crescent City, Illinois in 1870. He was first in charge of the R. R. office and afterward engaged in the lumber business for five years. He then was in the flax seed and farm implement business. He was postmaster at Crescent City and also served as township treasurer, justice of the peace and assessor during the decade in which he resided there. He moved to Watseka in the year 1880 and was closely identified with the politics of Middleport township, holding many township officest. He was sheriff of Iroquois county three terms and county treasurer one term. He was a Master Mason, and was a member of Mary Commandery of Watseka Knights Templar. In 1860, he married Adaline DICKERSON of Rome, N.Y., and they had three children. He was survived by one daughter, Hattie E. RIGGS of Watseka and one son, Charles E.Barber of Sioux City, Iowa and two grandchildren, Mrs. Harriet JOHNSON of Pemberton, N. J. and Herbert RIGGS, of Omaha, Neb. He was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Watseka. I am interested in any information about Charles E. BARBER and his family when they lived in Crescent City and in Watseka, and of his descendants. Thank you for your help.
