Madison County which is home of the world famous covered bridges.  The Earlham exit is the fastest route from the interstate to two of those bridges, The Hogback bridge and the Roseman Bridge.

Quaker families migrated from Indiana to settle in this area in 1853.  The only white inhabitants previously to their arrival were trappers and traders.  Earlham dates its existence to the 1868 construction of the Chicago Rock Island and Pacific Railroad through Iowa and it was a key depot between Des Moines and Omaha.  It was incorporated in 1870 with 222 citizens.

Earlham did not become the railroad hub envisioned by its founders.  It thrived as a limestone quarrying area and retail center for the farming community.  By the year 1879, three rail car loads of limestone were shipped out of Earlham's quarries daily.  This busy, new town soon boasted general stores, blacksmith shops, a bank, drug store, hotel, butcher shop, restaurant, confectionary store and two milliners.

The growth of Earlham continued into the 1900's.  Phone service arrived in 1902, electricity and municipal water in 1910.  Auto dealerships soon followed to coexist with the livery barns.  Entertainment was offered by a theater, opera house and skating rink.  It's estimated population in 2003 was 1,317.

Earlham was famous actor John Wayne's boyhood home,.  His father ran a drug and jewelry store there.  Earlham's colorful past is preserved in the historic storefront on Chestnut Street and the lovely Victorian and craftsman style home along its residential streets.

Earlham Cemetery is located in Madison County, Madison Twp., Iowa, about a mile southeast of the City of Earlham, Iowa. Take Main Street about 1 mile East and then right.  The cemetery is just before you get to the railroad tracks.  The original cemetery was the northeast section of the cemetery (Section A) and was a gift to the town by Mark D. Hill.  He plotted it and sold about 21 lots before deeding it to the municipal corporation on May 5,1893.  As Section A filled up the town of Earlham acquired additional land to the east and south of Section A.

Earlham Iowa is located approximately 20 minutes west of West De Moines on Interstate 80, exit 104.  The town was named after the Earlham Hall of England and a Quaker college in Richmond, IN.  Earlham is the "Northern Gateway" into
