Wabash County is located in central Indiana. It was previously part of what is now Huntington County and was organized March 1, 1835. It's county seat is Wabash, the first electrified city in the United States. It is crossed by four rivers, the best known of which is probably the Wabash River. Wabash County was the hunting grounds for the Potowatomi and Miami Indian tribes prior to 1826. On February 8, 1827 the first land was purchased by Jeremiah Cox and other white settlers began moving into the area. Several Indian tribes were still living along the upper Wabash River Valley in 1850. Many descendants of these Indians still live in Wabash County.
North Manchester, Indiana
The first known residents in the Manchester area were the Miami Native Americans. In 1750 the Potawatomi tribe immigrated southward to the area and in 1834 the first white settlers began arriving. The "Original plat of Manchester" was filed for recording on February 13, 1837. Manchester was renamed North Manchester in 1836 and was incorporated in 1874. Three Underground Railroad Stations operated in Wabash County circa (1844-1848). Maurice Place and son, Issaac operated one in North Manchester.
