Halderman Cemetery, North Manchester, Wabash County, Indiana
Halderman Cemetery is located in North Manchester, Wabash County, Indiana, a few blocks north of downtown North Manchester on North Market Street (the west light in town) and is right next to the birthplace of Thomas R. Marshall, the 28th Vice President of the United States
Allen Halderman and his wife, Jane, and their children came to North Manchester in 1838. The original Town cemetery was founded between 1838 and 1840 when their daughter died. Since there was no cemetery, Mr. Halderman set aside a tract of land to be used for that purpose. The town was not incorporated and even though Mr. Halderman's heirs retained title to the land, people were permitted to select and use burial plots without charge. Iin later years descendants moved away and since no governing agency had the authority to compel proper care, the cemetery fell into disrepair. In 1955 the stones were removed due to the condition of the cemetery. No official record of all burials was ever made. Most of the stones have been destroyed but the ones that were still good were placed on the wall. There are eight plaques mounted on the brick wall listing all the known names.
