Iowa County, Iowa
In 1842 -1843 Native Americans gave up title to all land that is now Iowa County.  And on May 1, 1843 white settlers were officially allowed to make claims for land but could not purchase it yet because the land hadn't been surveyed.  When the surveying was completed the county was divided into Congressional townships. During 1845-1856 all Native Americans officially moved to reservations west of the Missouri River and authorization for organization of Iowa County, its survey & establishment was made by the Territorial Legislature.

Marengo became the county seat in 1854 and in 1847 the first court house was built.  The 2nd court house was built in 1851 but was soon outgrown due to the arrival of German pioneers who settled in the Amana Colonies.  A third courthouse built of bricks was authorized in 1861.  In 1891 residents of Iowa County voted to to build a new courthouse.  This brick building on Green Street (now Court Avenue) was completed by July 1, 1893.  In June of 1980 the courthouse was placed on the National Register of Historic Places and in 1985 renovation projects were completed to restore it. Mt. Zion Cemetery,  Dayton Township, Iowa County, Iowa
Mt. Zion Cemetery is located in Dayton Township, about 8 miles south and west of Millersburg and about 12 miles west of North English on Hwy 76, on the North side of the road.  Another cemetery and a closed Catholic Church are on the south side of the road.  Map

Mt. Zion Cemetery is old with stones dating back to 1856 or before and burials are still continuing to be made there.  The cemetery is on land once owned by W. D. Hurd, the M. A. Wagner farm and the F. B. Neff farm.  It was deeded in about 1889 to the trustees of Mount Zion M. E. Church, which was organized as the Mt. Zion Methodist Protestant Church in 1858 by Rev. N. Linder.  Source: Iowa County IAGenWeb:Records - Cemeteries: Iowa County Cemetery Stones and History by Pauline Lillie
