Cemetery & Grave Marker Photos
Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Belmont, Co., Ohio
Also known as Holly View Cemetery & Pleasant Grove Methodist Cemetery.
Pleasant Grove Cemetery is located on Holly View Dr. - CR 452, a small road or lane off of Hwy 250, Colerain Twp., Belmont County, OH. Map The cemetery is almost directly across from the United Methodist Church and the United Church of Christ in Pleasant Grove. At the beginning of the road (lane) is a sign that says "CRAFTS". It is located in a rural setting in beautiful, rolling hills and cannot be seen from the highway. There is not a cemetery sign or parking. The land appears to move at will and because of the many different angles the grave markers have leaned, the grave markers appear to have swayed with the land. Although the cemetery is mowed regularly it is sadly deteriorating and more and more headstones are falling. Sources: Donna Hamm, Irish Mason, http://www.pbase.com/image/35521080.
I've also seen Holly View Drive referred to as Donley Hollow Road and Hunkey Hollow Road.
Sometime during the past two years a new sign with the name Holly View Cemetery has replaced the former Pleasant Grove Cemetery sign. Many cemeteries in Belmont County are known by more than one name. Following the culmination of many years of research by society members of the Cumberland Trail Genealogical Society, the cemetery book, "Your guide to the Cemeteries of Belmont County", was published in 2005. The members attempted to not only locate all the cemeteries in the county but to also find all the alternative names for them. They walked through the fields, woods and hollows of the country and talked to many, many people, in an attempt to locate all the burial grounds they could find. Other members searched old newspapers, death certificates, historical records, etc to find any name a cemetery might have been known by down through the years. Later the members met and decided which name was to be listed in the book. The other names were listed as "also known as". They chose Pleasant Grove Cemetery for this cemetery in their "Cemetery Guide" -- Source: Skip Magyar, MyFamily.com-"Belmont County, Ohio"
Note: It would be interesting to know why the Colerain Township trustees chose the name "Holly View Cemetery" for the new sign.
