Guthrie Center is the county seat of Guthrie Center, Iowa and is located in the Des Moines metro area. The county was originally part of old Keokuk County and was comprised of approximately the western 2/3 of the state of Iowa. In 1851 the region was divided into counties one of which was Guthrie, named for Captain William Guthrie, formerly of Keokuk and the captain of the only company Iowa sent to the Mexican War.
Part of the Underground Railroad passd through southern Guthrie county in the mid-1800's. A number of families in the southern townships were "conductors' on the URR and helped hide, feed, cloth, direct and transport runaway slaves to freedom in Canada.
William Tracy came to Guthrie in 1856 and purchased the land which is now Guthrie Center. He then sold the land to E. B. Newton who proceeded in the laying out of the town. The plat for the town was filed by him on May 6, 1856. Guthrie Center's estimated population in 2003 was 1,654.
