Shelby County, Harlan, Iowa
Shelby County was named after General Isaac Shelby in 1851 by the General Assembly of Iowa.  He was famous for serving in the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812.

Shelby County's geography includes rolling hills, ridges, groves and the main river is the Nishnabina.  The Western part of the county was settled mainly by German Catholics, while the southwestern corner includes a Danish settlement.  People of Norwegian, English and Irish also settled in the county.  Shelby County is famous for the Elk Horn Danish Windmill, the Danish immigrant museum, many historic churches and its music festival, "Jammin on the Square"

On April 4, 1859 Harlan, located along the West Nishnabotna River, was made the county seat.  The town was named for one of Iowa's early U.S. Senators, James Harlan.  A a courthouse was finally constructed in 1860.  Fire destroyed the brick courthouse before it was finished and a building being constructed for a store building was purchased.  This building was replaced in 1876 by a frame structure.  The town was incorporated on May 2, 1879.  In 1892 the present courthouse was completed and in 1978 the courthouse was designated as a national historic site.
