Atkinson Cemetery, Grant County, Indiana
Atkinson Cemetery is located on State Road 5 (originally State Road 221) in Monroe Township, Grant Co., near Upland, Indiana.  Map  This cemetery is one of the early family burial grounds with the earliest stone being that of Levi, son of Chas. & L. Atkinson, who died on 11th month, 1842.  Before the Civil War, his father, Charles Atkinson was the chief conductor and maintained the main office of the Underground Railroad.  According to the inscription on Charles stone he was born in York Co., Pennsylvania June 21, 1796.  The 1877 Grant County Atlas states that Charles entered his land in Monroe Township in the year 1836 but it was 2 more years before he brought his family there to live.  It was on this land that the cemetery was built.  His son James was living on a part that land in 1877.  The cemetery was open to other families as well as the Atkinson family.  More than 1/3 of the burials are of the Atkinson family and is very likely some of the other people buried there are related to the Atkinsons.  Source: http://files.usgwarchives.org/in/grant/cemetery/atkinson.txt
