Washington County, IA is one of two counties that make up the Iowa City, Iowa Metropolitan Area. It's county seat is Washington. The county was originally formed in 1838 as Slaughter County in honor of the secretary of the Wisconsin territory, William Slater but was renamed Washington County in honor of George Washington.

Washington County is home to an Amish community known for its quilting tradition. A group called Barn Quilts of Washington County Committee places quilt squares on barns and other significant buildings, to showcase the symbolism and heritage of the patterns that provided warmth and comfort for generations.
