Washington County, IA is one of two counties that make up the Iowa City, Iowa Metropolitan Area.  It's county seat is Washington.  The county was originally formed in 1838 as Slaughter County in honor of the secretary of the Wisconsin territory, William Slater but was renamed Washington County in honor of George Washington.

Washington County is located in SE Iowa which is part of the richest of America's agricultural regions.  Ainsworth is one of nine incorporated cities in the county.
